My World of Steam Locomotives |
'WORKING STEAM LOCOMOTIVES' My definition of 'working steam locomotive' is a railway which is still in operation. Despite their apparent demise over 40 years ago, steam locomotives continue to work productively in remote locations around the world. Numerous serious attempts have been made to bring steam locomotives back into general railway use. The Working Steams are getting rarer and rarer around the world because of the hight cost to maintain their running condition and out of replacement parts. China remains the 'big show' and Cuba comes a commendable second because they are using steam locomotives to carry out a job of work rather than solely attracting tourists. All-year-round steam operations continue in both Germany and Poland although their days are surely numbered. There are various organizations that operate overseas tours for steam enthusiasts. |
