And now I feel like number one
Yet I’m last in line
I watch my younger son
It helps to pass the time
"Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!" I heard Jake's tiny voice draw nearer and nearer. Bambi quickly sat up, wiping her face clean of the tears and putting on the biggest smile.
"What are you up to?"
"Can I play with the doggies?"
"You'll have to ask Nick. This is his house and they are his dogs."
I soon saw him purse his lips together, causing me to silently hold my breath. Never before had I seen him do that. It eerily reminded me of myself for a moment. "You wanna play with Nicki and Houston?" His eyes lit up as soon as I asked.
"Can I?"
"You mean may I," corrected Bambi.
"May I?"
"Can you, may you, whatever it is," I lightly chuckled. "They're in the backyard. Go ahead and give 'em a good runnin' around."
I watched as he lightly kissed Bambi on the cheek. Trent didn't deserve to have any of this. Here I am, a pretty decent guy if I do say so myself, and this asshole had this beautiful woman and adorable kid. I was the one she always ran to when she was in a storm, but it seemed as though I wasn't good enough for the sunny days. As soon as Jake ran out the door I got this feeling in the pit of my stomach. It was a feeling that whatever more Bambi had to tell me was about him.
"He's yours."
She blurted those two words out so quickly that it was almost like a slap in the face. You're not quite sure what hit you, but you know whatever it was it was damn hard. "That's impossible." My mouth became dry as I tried to continue speaking. "We never did anything."
She slowly stood from her position next to me. "Men are so easy to seduce," she whispered. "It's so simple to get what you want when you and the other person aren't exactly yourselves."
It was with those words that she need not say anymore. In an instant, the memories came rushing back to me like a nightmare you wanted to forget. I followed her lead, standing up and walking over to the window, staring at the young boy that belonged to me. I was hoping that by watching him the bad thoughts would leave my mind, but he was only a reminder of our one horrible moment in time.
And when your walls come tumbling down
I will always be around
