After dinner, Nick and Sara headed over to her house, just like he had wanted.
"Please, make yourself at home. I'm gonna go get changed." She excused herself and ran upstairs.
Nick walked into the kitchen and was immediately greeted by old memories. He and Sara had spent countless hours in her house. Even before he joined BSB, Sara's parents were barely around, so he'd keep her company. He felt guilty once he had to leave. Who was going to watch after her? Obviously no one was watching over her. True, she was seventeen-years-old, but she was also his special girl. At the age when most boys thought girls were icky, he adored Sara. His mother called it a crush, he called it love. He loved Sara. As he walked around the living room, he stopped dead in his tracks. ‘I love Sara,' he thought. It had always been that he loved her as his best friend, but now it was simply that he loved her. ‘No, I can't be feeling this for her. I haven't seen her for a year...but I've known her my whole life.'
"I'm back!" she exclaimed, jumping up behind him.
Nick turned around, almost afraid that she had heard his thoughts. "Geez, Rhi! Are you trying to give me a heart attack my first night back?"
She froze for a moment. "No one's called me that since..."
"Since the last time I saw you?" he interrupted.
"Well, you were the only one I allowed to even utter the name." She hated her middle name. It was so odd. Her parents were hippies and really into the group Fleetwood Mac. They named her after two of their hit songs; ‘Sara' and ‘Rhiannon'. Nick liked it the minute he heard it and practically insisted that it be her nickname, one that only he could use. In his mind, the name matched her beauty. There was an awkward pause that Sara decided to break. "We can go up to me room. I've got a big screen television up there and we can watch movies if ya want."
"Big screen, huh? How could I pass that up?"
They headed upstairs and entered her huge room. It was practically an apartment. To look around, you'd think that she'd be so happy. She never flaunted it, but she had money. She could basically buy anything she wanted, almost anything. No matter how much money she had, she could never seem to get the attention and love of her parents.
"So, what movie do you wanna watch?" she asked as she stood in front of her video rack.
Nick glanced around and his eyes stopped. "That one," he said, pointing to ‘Something About Mary'.
"That’s an excellent choice, one of my personal favorites!"
They lay on her bed, laughing their heads off at the film. Sara had the giggles bad, so bad that she hadn't even noticed Nick staring at her.
Nick looked over at her. Her laugh was beautiful...she was beautiful. Her long blonde hair framed her angelic face perfectly. Despite her unhappy home life, Nick could always make her laugh. When she did laugh, her green eyes danced. After these umpteen years of knowing her, it finally hit him. He knew this girl better than she knew herself and vise versa. This close friendship was quickly turning into something more...or had it been happening slowly over all this time? He wasn't sure what it was, but the emotions he was feeling were too strong to be ignored.
Sara looked over at him, still laughing. Her laughing slowly trailed off as she noticed Nick's intense stare. How long had he been looking at her? Strands of his perfect blonde hair hung in front of his gorgeous blue eyes. For as long as she could remember, she had liked Nick, but made no attempt to turn their friendship into a romance. He could do so much better than her. She knew she had problems. A guy like Nick didn't need a troubled girlfriend in his life to mess things up.
Without giving it anymore thought, he leaned forward and kissed her. Ignoring her previous thoughts, she kissed him back.
