Autoplan is the compulsory automobile insurance program in British Columbia. All automobiles must be registered and insured with Basic Autoplan. However, increasing coverage is a very good idea and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) as well as many other insurance companies can provide these excess coverages.

Basic Autoplan

$200,000 Third Party Liability coverage. If you are found legally liable for a crash, Basic Autoplan covers the cost of damages to the third party.
Accident Benefits. Basic Autoplan provides some financial assistance for wage loss, medical or rehabilitation cost, funeral expenses (up to $2500), and death benefits to the survivors.
Underinsured Motorist Protection. In case you, a household family member, or passenger in your vehicle is injured and the at-fault driver does not have enough liability coverage, Basic Autoplan provides $1,000,000.
Hit-and-Run and Uninsured Motorist coverage. Basic Autoplan provides $200,000 of coverage in the case of damage, injury, or death caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver.
Inverse Liability coverage. In case of an accident occuring in a province or state where the right to recover losses is legally prohibited, Basic Autoplan will pay the amount of your loss up to the amount the at-fault driver would be liable for.

ICBC Excess Coverages

Subject to additional premiums.

Extended Third Party Liability You can increase the basic $200,000 liability coverage to amounts of $1,000,000 or more.

Collision Covers repair or replacement of your vehicle if it is damaged due to upset or collision with another vehicle, a person, or an object. This coverage is subject to a deductible.

Comprehensive Covers loss or damage to your vehicle caused by everything not covered until Collision. This coverage is subject to a deductible.

Specified Perils Covers damage caused by fire, lightning, theft (except by an employee or member of your household), windstorm, earthquake, hail, explosion, riot, civil commotion, falling or fored landing of an aircraft or portion of it, rising water or the stranding, sinking, burining, derailment, or collision of a conveyance transporting the vehicle on land or water. This coverage is an alternative to Comprehensive, not in addition. This coverage is subject to a $300 deductible.

Loss Of Use If you make a claim under your Collision, Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage, this coverage reimburses you for the cost of renting a substitute vehicle, hiring taxis or using public transportation.

Limited Depreciation Coverage If you have Collision, Comprehensive or Specified Perils and your car is not more than three model years old, you can increase the amount payable in case of a claim insurable under your Collision, Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage.

Specialized Plans The Roadside Plus Package is available for private passenger and commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 5000kg or less which have Collision coverage and are residents of British Columbia.
The Roadstar Package is available for ICBC Road Stars (drivers who have at least 9 consecutive years free of chargeable claims).

ICBC Roadside Plus Package

Loss Of Use If you make a claim under your Collision, Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage, this coverage reimburses you for the cost of renting a substitute vehicle, hiring taxis or using public transportation. This coverage allows a total of $750 for substitute transportation with a daily limit of $100. Motor home coverage has a total limit of $1000 with no daily limit.
Travel Protection Coverage This coverage reimburses you for the extra costs you might encounter if you are away from home on a trip as long as 30 days and the vehicle you are using in involved in a crash, vandalized or is stolen.
Rental Vehicle Coverage This coverage protects you when you are using a rental vehicle or courtesy vehicle for up to 30 days including: $2,000,000 Third Party Legal Liability, Accident Benefits, Underinsured Motorist Protection, Collision and Comprehensive coverage each subject to $300 deductible, and Loss Of Use coverage.
Family World Wide Transportation If, as a result of a vehicle crash, you require immediate and ongoing medical life support intervention in an intensive care until of a hospital or registerd care facility, this coverage will pay to bring your immediate family members to you within seven days. This coverage reimburses up to a total of $5000 for travel to the hospital or registered care facility and return fare home and $500 for living expenses.
Lock Re-Keying If your keys or remote keyless-entry transmitter are stolen, this coverage reimburses you for the cost of replacing them and re-keying your locks up to maximum of $1000.
Theft Deductible Waiver If your vehicle is stolen, you will not have to pay the deductible under your regular Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage.
Destination Assistance This coverage reimburses you the cost (up to $100) to commence or complete a journey when your vehicle is unavailable due to a loss for which a claim is made under your Collision, theft or vandalism coverage.
Emergency Roadside Expense Repayment This coverage protects you in case of a breakdown. It reimburses you, up to a total of $50 per occurence, for emergency service to make your vehicle operational, or to transport your vehicle to a repair facility. Limited to two occurances per policy term.
