Accessing SurreyNet: Surrey's First Class Network System

Below you will find directions to access First Class for Surrey Teachers. Once online, check out the Human Resources link for Teachers on Call and Teachers.

The TOCs also have a ListServ, separate from FirstClass, please use the link on the homepage to subscribe.

To access SurreyNet (Surrey's First Class network) you need to have the clinet software on your computer. You can download either the Mac Client or the Windows Client by clicking here or at http://fc.sd36.bc.ca/clientdownloads/

You will see a number of choices there. Download the FULL VERSION (GOLD) for either Windows or Macintosh (depending on your system).

For Mac Users , make sure that you do a "custom install" and install only the First Class software. In the upper left of the install window you will see a pop-up menu called Easy Install. Hold your mouse button down on that and drag to "Custom Install". You don't need or want any of that other stuff, so simply click in the boxes to deselect the other choices. The one at the top is the only one you want to install.

For Windows users , ensure your download box says "Save this program to disk" and click "OK". The next screen asks you where you want to save the file to: save it whereever you want, but remember where you put it. I usually put all my files in one file directory so no one accidently deletes them on me. Find the file you downloaded and click on the icon. You can do a "custom install" as outlined above for the Mac users. The other options are more for the very advanced users and you probably will not ever use them.

A word about the custom install options....the FirstClass IP Network Notifier is useful if your computer is online with the district network and you want your computer to notify you when you get an email. The way this works is that if you are online and FirstClass is running, when you receive an email, you get an alert...on my PC, I get a ping noise if my speakers are on.

After the installation is complete, you will notice a new icon on your desktop called "First Class" in a black box with a red comet through it. You can rename it whatever you want, but I left mine as FirstClass. On a Windows machine, right click and go to rename.

Once you have installed the Client Software, launch the program by double clicking on that nice new icon. If the window comes up asking you to enter settings, in the field called SERVER , enter fc.sd36.bc.ca .

Your user ID is your last name, then the underscore, then your first initial, as in smith_j . Just a note, if you have a common last name and first initial, there could be a chance that someone else in the district also has the same user id with this method. If you find your user id won't work no matter what, please ask any tech person at any school, or James Hogan for assistance. You can also try your inputting your entire first name after the underscore .... so smith_joe

Your TEMPORARY password is your school district id number. CHANGE IT FIRST THING!

Just a note...IF your account is inactive for a certain period of time, it is dropped from the server and you will have to request it to be readded. Make sure you check it at least once a month.

You are now online! Take a tour and see all the features of FirstClass SurreyNet!

There are many many options on SurreyNet of things you can do. Ask a technology teacher in any school, call James at CISC, or watch for a SurreyNet workshop.
