Bones in the Crypt

An early cemetery around St. Stephen's Cathedral was closed by Emperor Karl VI but the crypt was used until 1783. Convict labour was used to break up the coffins, which had been stacked on top of each other, after a period to allow for decomposition of the bodies had been allowed. The bones can still be seen in various chambers of the crypt.
