Salzburg was a small, self-governing state from 1481 until 1803. It was ruled by a succession of Prince Archbishops, temporal as well as religious rulers. Mozart was born in the Getreidegasse on the left hand side of the river Salzach looking downstream and the family later moved to an appartment in the Makartplatz on the opposite side of the river.
