Intarsia Quality hand crafted Intarsia from Canada. Wood decoration falls into five areas: painting, gliding, engraving, carving, and intarsia. The ancient art of intarsia is the making of decorative pictorial mosaics by laying precious and or exotic materials into or onto a groundwork of solid wood.
Work of this sort is seen in the history of ancient Egypt, Rome, Persia, 8th century Japan, and 15th and 16th century Germany and Italy.
According to Italian authorities, the word intarsia is derived from the Latin verb interserere, "to insert".
Each piece is created with Western Red Cedar and pine. Using red cedar give the opportunity of using different shades to create a more realistic piece. Pine is used to create white sections on a certain animal. Every piece is individually done, and no one piece is exactly the same. Every piece is shaped to produce a dimensional effect, no flat pieces here. No staining is involved only natural shade. We give all pieces a satin clear coat. Each piece is signed and dated by the artist Graham Prinn.
