Beardies

(before and after)

Bridget - Owners: Jim and Gwynn Sullivan
Bridget entered our lives three years ago and has an AKC "ILP" stating that she is a true Beardie. We can't imagine life without her now and Clancy would be devastated if he were to lose his great friend. Bridget was found wandering at a local truck stop, where she had somehow survived for some two weeks before someone was able to catch her and call us, as the rescue persons for the area. As the "before" photo shows, it was anybody's guess as to her breed. We felt sure enough that rather than try to place her, we would keep her until we could determine for sure just what she was. It took almost a year for her coat to grow out enough to tell that she really was a Beardie. As the "after" photo shows, there's no longer any question!

Panda - Owner: Barbara Makris
"Panda" was born in a puppymill, sold to a pet store in Atlanta, GA, and purchased as "a gift" for someone. She lived with her owner until a tornado destroyed her home. She ended up in an Atlanta, GA animal shelter where she languished for 7 weeks. On the 8th week, my husband flew from CA to GA to rescue Panda. It was love at first sight for all of us. How has she changed our lives? Well, our backyard now grows inside the house, if you know what I mean! We don't own a single plastic food container which does not have teeth marks. The formerly white kitchen floor is a nice beige color. Best of all, Panda loves other dogs, so we now have TWO more rescue dogs in our household. Nothing has ever been the same since Panda came to us, and we are thankful!

Rags - Owner: Glenn Short
Rags Rescue - before and only one year later. I wish I had taken a photo of him before I cleaned him up a year ago - he looked just as bad. When you groom them up a little (as I was going to place him at the time) - you fluff out the hair to make it look better and longer - and I didn't even take a photo for 4 weeks for some reason so the hair had started to come in.. Ah well, pretty remarkable anyway as this was exactly 12 months difference.

Susannah - Owner: Paty McAfoose
Susannah was at our vet's little adoption center for three weeks before we adopted her. I spent too much time arguing with God that I didn't need another dog and I also kept asking for signs from Him. Three times I received signs....... so Susannah came home and became my "Gift from God".

Loki - Owner:Nicole Idzi
Loki joined me and Max through an unexpected chain of events starting with his last minute rescue from the shelter by BONE. He was literally scheduled to be put down that day, and a California breeder helped out by getting him out. He then spent a month being kenneled for lack of foster homes. Shortly thereafter, I placed an offer on a home in Texas and decided Loki would make a fine addition to our little family. Kathy Bookbinder graciously offered to foster him till I was settled in and could have him join us. About 3 months later, he made the flight from California to Texas, where he is now very much a part of our family. He has had some problems to overcome throughout his ordeal. Strong suspicions are that he has been previously abused, so we had to work on his trust of people. He would never hurt anyone, but was incredibly submissive. After months and months of work and love, he no longer pees on the floor when strangers come to the house, falls onto his back when you try to put a leash on him, or cowers in fear if you speak even a little too harshly to either him or Max. He loves snuggles and is an incredibly fast learner - always eager to please and be loved. I know Max also loves having a new brother. They still have occasional spats, as brothers will, but they also have a lot of fun together. They also keep each other company while I work during the day, and this has allowed Loki to teach Max everything he knows about curiousity and getting into mischieve. But we wouldn't have it any other way!

Mickey - Owner: Patty McAfoose
Picture - Mikey Vet 1st - (Before) This is the very first picture we took of Mikey when we picked him up at the vet after being groomed, neutered, and got all shots needed. This was his first look at us too. Picture - MikeyWithHair - (After) Is a picture of Mikey now with his hair grown back in. Still hates cameras. Story - Mikey was spotted by BCCA person at kill shelter in Boone, NC. Thought he might be a full bearded collie. After closer examination it was decided that he was a Neardie, either a Beardie Mix or just a cute shaggy. Bone decided to adopt him from the awful shelter and get him cleaned up. We became his foster parents although we had great doubts as he was described as very destructive and hard to manage and barked a lot. As it turns out we (fosters) fell in love with him at first glance and he fit into our lives so very comfortably one would think he had always been with us. When someone contacted us to adopt him, we decided nope he's already "home". Very good decision. He is such a gentleman. He loves our other dog, is nice to our cat, loves kids, walks well on a leash, is extremely well behaved at home and with guests and we love him dearly. He is now three years old, we think and has a long and very dense coat but it does not mat too terribly. He may not have any Beardie at all but he is the right fella for us! While still at the vet's, some angel decided to pay for all of his doctoring and sheltering, etc., anonymously. We still do not know this wonderful angel's name but we don't need to as he/she is simply "The Angel" to us and in our prayers forever. So now our little family is happily complete. The awful little "owner drop off" was instead a "gentleman in disguise". :o)

Scotia - Owners:Judy & Pat Brescia was fostered and entered by Patty McAfoose
Scotia was a foster of ours for Bone. She was in a kill shelter in Haywood Co. N.C. and was a mess. She was covered with tics, mats, an infected site, and was completely blind in one eye, but just a sweetie. She would sit before you and gently give you her paw. She had to be shaved down completely and looked tiny, vulnerable and very unbeardielike. We loved her so much but she got a wonderful forever home and has just blossomed. We cried buckets when we had to turn her over to her new family but even though we still miss her we are so glad that she has such happiness in her life now.
