Age: 21, Dec. 8, 1978

From: Covington, LA

The son of a massage therapist and a building contractor, boating, swimming, fishing, and training horses were Ian's choice recreational activities in his small Louisiana hometown, as well as the school drama club and performances with the local theater group. At age ten, Ian started modeling, taking him to New York each summer.

p> In junior high, Ian focused more on sports and academics until he received an opportunity to model in Europe. At the age of seventeen, his focus altered again to acting and he began studying in New York. Two years later he was devoted, studying with acting couch William Esper. While working as an extra in the feature film "Black & White," a visiting talent manager spotted Ian amidst 400 others in a crowd scene and signed him immediately.

Happy to be anchored in New York, Somerhalder spends much of his time studying acting, writing and practicing yoga. His recreational interests include water and snow skiing and horseback riding.

Ian's role as Hamilton Flemming on "Young Americans" marks his network series debut.
