The rules of the game


Teams
Six players from each team are on the ice during the game. The names of their positions and what they do:
One goalkeeper (Goalie): Most demanding job on the team; goalie must prevent attacking team from scoring topper
toppertoppertopper Three fowards: (Center, left wing, right wing); main job is to score goals; center usually leads the team's attack and takes part in most face-offs
Two defensemen: (Right and left); main job is to guard their team's defending zone toppertopper

Playing time
dotThree 20-minute periods separated by two 15-min. intermissions.
dotEach team is allowed one 30-sec. time-out per game.
dotTo keep the action fast, hockey has an unusual rule:
It is the only major sport that allows players to be substituted while play is in progress.
