Illusions

Waiting in the rain, she sneaks a glance at her watch.
He is late.

She is angry, feels let down.

He is warm, safe in the arms of a lover. He forgets, or maybe doesn't care... He is in his own heaven.

She sighs, and puts up an umbrella. She is glad the rain hides her tears, absentmindedly wiping them with her sleeve.

He is asleep, content with his experience.

She is hurt, worried... Naive...
She goes home to get warm, to call him... Make sure her love is alright.

He picks up the phone, smooth and cool - a cough ready to add to his voice's lies.
He gives her a story.

She believes, cozy at last in her own bed, though alone.

And he is content, pleased with himself.

They close their eyes, and drift to sleep... Each living their own lies.
Believing their own illusions.
