July 21 2008 – Recap by Sassy
Great American Bash Results – I
didn’t watch it, but I did read the results:
The Game Triple H retained his
WWE Championship by defeating The Rated R Superstar Edge.
John Bradshaw Layfield defeated
John Cena in a NYC Parking Lot Brawl Match. Michelle McCool defeated Natalya to
win the Diva’s Championship (I’m still gagging over that match).
WWE ECW Champion The World’s
Strongest Man Mark Henry retained his ECW title by defeating Tommy Dreamer.
Y2J Chris Jericho defeated
Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels.
In a United States Championship
Match challenger The Gold Standard Shelton Benjamin defeated Matt Hardy to
become the new United States Champion
In a Fatal Four Way Match for the
WWE Tag Team Championship, Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder defeated champions John
Morrison & The Miz, Jesse & Festus, and Finlay & Hornswoggle to
become the new WWE Tag Team Champions.
In a WWE Heavyweight Championship
Match, CM Punk retained his title when he and Batista ended the match with a
double disqualification after Kane interfered in the match. Kane still wants to
know: Is he alive or is he dead and he took out a cameraman for good measure.
Last week on Raw
Mickie James, WWE Women’s Champion, defeated Katie Lea
Burchill with Paul Burchill in 3 minutes.
In a title match, Kofi Kingston, WWE Intercontinental
Champion, with Mickie James retained his title by defeating Paul Burchill with
Katie Lea Burchill in 5 minutes.
The Glamazon Beth Phoenix defeated Santino Marella in 1
CM Punk, WWE World Heavyweight Champion, defeated The Big
Red Machine Kane via count out in 7 minutes.
Y2J Chris Jericho with Lance Cade defeated Paul London in
In a not really a match, Snitsky squashed Jamie Noble with
Layla in 2 minutes.
In the main event six-man tag team match, John Cena, Shad
& JTG of Cryme Tyme defeated John Bradshaw Layfield and WWE World
Heavyweight Champions Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase in 13 minutes.
Monday Night Raw is broadcast on the USA network from
Mohegan Sun Casino.
Ringside announcers: Michael Cole & Jerry “The
Ring announcer: Lillian Garcia
Backstage interviews: Todd Grisham
The Animal Batista enters the ring dressed in his street
clothes no doubt to complain about his loss at last night’s pay-per-view.
Batista says that since the McMahons are not in the building, Batista is putting
himself in charge and the match he is going to make is CM Punk defending his
title against Batista in the ring. Batista threatens Kane and tells him that he
is not to interfere in the match tonight. John Bradshaw Layfield shows up on the
monitor to tell Batista that Batista is not in charge and that he, JBL, is in
charge because he defeated John Cena in his match last night and the next title
match is JBL’s. Batista tells JBL to come to the ring and they will discuss
their difference of opinion. JBL says he will get his title match at Summerslam
because he doesn’t feel like being in a championship match tonight. JBL says
he is finishing off Kane, then corrects himself and says Cena tonight in a
six-man tag team match. JBL tells Batista to go find Kane. CM Punk appears at
the top of the entrance ramp and heads to the ring. Punk tells JBL that it is
the law of the jungle and they have The Animal and since Punk is the
titleholder, Punk is the King and he doesn’t have to listen to anyone. Punk
tells Batista that he will face Batista tonight for the World Heavyweight title.
JBL, still on the monitor starts yelling but Batista tells someone to cut off
JBL and then agrees to face Punk for the title tonight. We go to commercial
Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels’ entrance music begins but is
cut off by Lance Cade who enters the arena. Cade takes Lillian Garcia’s mic to
tell Shawn Michaels that he used to be Cade’s mentor and that last night
Michael’s took the beating of his life but he knows Michaels is in the
building. Cade invites Michaels to the ring. Cade says they are going to have
words like they should have had a long time ago.
Paul London from Austin weighing 190 lbs.
Cade doesn’t get an introduction – that’s what he gets
for taking the mic. While Cade is beating on London, he keeps yelling for
Michaels to come out to the ring. London delivers a cross body block and gets a
two count. In what could be a good powerhouse versus a good wrestler match, the
feud between Jericho and Michaels seems to be the center of the match. Cade
delivers a power bomb and goes for the cover. He gets the three count. Time: 3
Winner: Lance Cade with a power bomb
This was not an impressive match - not even one minute of the
whole three-minute match. London can do so much more in the ring. Cade
introduces the man who might have ended Shawn Michaels career, Chris Jericho.
Jericho enters the ring also dressed in his street clothes. We go to commercial
Jericho is in the ring with mic in hand. Jericho says that
Michaels isn’t coming to the ring and then introduces footage of the match
between Jericho and Michaels last night. It looks like Michaels did a lot of
bleeding during his match last night. The referee eventually stopped the match,
deeming Michaels unable to continue and awarded Jericho the win. Jericho blames
the fans for what happened to Michaels. Jericho sounds more like a preacher than
a wrestler carrying on a feud. Jericho tells the fans that Michaels has cracked
ribs, internal bleeding and a detached retina and will never be able to see well
out of that eye again. Jericho says he is proud of what he did last night. The
audience doesn’t seem to be overly concerned about what happened to Michaels
in the ring last night. We go to commercial break.
Raw Rewind – The Glamazon Beth Phoenix defeating Santino
Marella in the ring last week on Raw.
Kelly Kelly from Jacksonville, FL
The Glamazon Beth Phoenix from Buffalo, NY
Kelly must be practicing her wrestling moves. She’s been
practicing screaming, too. Phoenix face plants Kelly on the mat and goes for the
pin, getting the win. Time: 3 minutes.
Winner: The Glamazon Beth Phoenix
It wasn’t a bad match but it certainly wasn’t a great
match. I’d like to see Phoenix in a match against Victoria, Natalya or Mickie
James instead of Kelly Kelly. We go to commercial break.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan is in the ring with a mic. Last week Cody
Rhodes & Ted Dibiase ran him down. Duggan says he wanted to come out and
tell fans that he was thinking about hanging up his boots and retiring. Duggan
says he won the first Royal Rumble and he has been wrestling for 30 years and
that he has survived kidney cancer. Duggan says that Rhodes & Dibiase may be
right and he’s too old to be in the ring. Duggan came out to say thank you to
the fans but Jerry “The King” Lawler gets into the ring and tells Duggan
that it is none of Lawler’s business but there is no age limit in the WWE.
Lawler talks Duggan into not retiring and Rhode & Dibiase, WWE World Tag
Team Champions, enter the ring. Dibiase says that just because Lawler likes to
date women younger than Dibiase & Rhodes, does not mean that Lawler can
relate to people their age. Lawler slaps Rhodes ala Lawler slapping Andy Kaufman
and Dibiase has to hold Rhodes back. Dibiase tells them that they will continue
their battle later. JBL appears and limps his way down to the ring.
Rematch from last week
Six-man Tag Team Match
John Bradshaw Layfield
Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase, WWE World Tag Team
We go to commercial break before their opponents are
Shad & JTG of Cryme Tyme
At a combined weight of 521 lbs.
John Cena weighing 240 lbs.
Cena appears with his left elbow taped. Michael Cole tells
the fans that Cena has glass in his left elbow from being thrown into an auto
windshield last night. JBL and Cena face each other in the ring, but JBL keeps
backing up and tags in Rhodes. Cena’s doing a good job with just one arm. Cena
goes for the cover but Rhodes kicks out at the count of two. Cena delivers a
back body drop and then tags in Shad. Shad goes for the cover and gets a two
count. Rhodes tags in Dibiase. Shad takes down Dibiase and goes for the cover
getting a two count. Shad tags in JTG. JTG goes for a pin getting a two count.
Dibiase hangs up JTG on the ropes and tags in JBL. The referee has to back JBL
off of JTG in the corner. Are there a lot of initials in this match or is it
just me? JBL tags in Rhodes. Rhodes tags in Dibiase who goes for the cover but
only gets a one count. Dibiase comes off the ropes with a stomp to JTG’s chest
and goes for the pin but JTG kicks out at the count of two. Dibiase tags in JBL.
JBL tags in Rhodes. JTG always seems to get the most time in the ring and not
necessarily in a good way. JTG goes for a roll up but Rhodes kicks out. JTG ends
up in the wrong corner again and Dibiase gets the tag. JBL is yelling at the ref
but I have no idea why. Both men are down on the mat and the ref is counting.
Dibiase tags in Rhodes. Rhodes goes for the cover but JTG kicks out. Rhodes
charges at JTG and JTG steps out of the way. Rhodes meets the ring post. JTG
tags in Cena as Rhodes tags in Dibiase. Cena takes down Dibiase but JBL enters
the ring and Cena takes him down, too. Rhodes enters the ring and Cena takes
them both on, delivering a double FU. JBL leaves the ring and the arena, Cena
goes for the cover and gets the three count. Time: 11 minutes.
Winners: John Cena with an FU, JTG
& Shad from Cryme Tyme
I was not overly thrilled with this match but I am not a JBL
fan. He didn’t do anything that impressed me in this match either. Shad &
JTG may be good in the ring but they never have matches that showcase any
talent. Cade & Jericho are backstage and as they head out the door, they
nearly run into The Big Red Machine Kane. Kane walks past them, carrying that
bag in his hand and heads down the hallway. We go to commercial break.
Intergender Tag Team Match
Mickie James from Richmond, VA
WWE Women’s Champion
Kofi Kingston from Jamaica weighing 218 lbs.
WWE Intercontinental Champion
Katie Lea Burchill
Both from Chelsea, England
I’m thinking the Burchill siblings could have done a great
job in a parking lot brawl but I’m not sure if Kingston and James would do
well. James is always impressive in the ring when she is allowed in the ring.
Burchill delivers a neck breaker to Kingston and gets the three count and the
win. Time: 4 minutes.
Winners: Paul Burchill with a neck
breaker & Katie Lea Burchill
Jamie Noble is backstage with Layla again. Batista appears
and asks if they have seen Kane. Noble shows off in front of Layla and Batista
grabs Noble by the throat. Noble has got to learn to keep his mouth shut.
We go to commercial break.
Punk is backstage with Todd Grisham who asks him why he is
willing to face Batista tonight. Punk says that if he goes down tonight, he will
go down swinging. JBL appears and points at the title belt. JBL tells Punk that
at Summerslam he will win the title no matter who the champion is then. Punk
says that his first successful title defense was against JBL. We go to
Lawler again introduces the footage of Jericho taking out
Michaels at GAB.
Santino Marella from Italy weighing
Marella says that last week when he issued an open challenge
it was to a man, not to a woman. Beth
Phoenix defeated Marella last week. Again he issues a challenge.
D’Lo Brown from Chicago, IL weighing 268 lbs.
The Glamazon Beth Phoenix enters the arena to watch the
match. D’Lo delivers a lowdown and gets the three count. Time: 1 minute.
Winner: D’Lo Brown with a lowdown
Marella seems to be the king of the one-minute match. After
the match, Phoenix enters the ring to face Marella. All that rasslin’ seems to
have created a little romance. May
I just say – WE HAVE ENOUGH OF THAT CRAP NOW ON SMACKDOWN! We go to commercial
WWE World Heavyweight Championship
The Animal Batista from Washington, DC, weighing 290 lbs.
Before Punk can be introduced, The Big Red Machine Kane
enters the arena.
I think the Championship match will be on hold for now. Kane
enters the ring and it’s Batista and Kane. Kane delivers a choke slam to
Batista and Punk enters the ring with the belt around his waist. Punk sends Kane
over the top rope, rips off the title belt and welcomes Kane back into the ring.
Several refs appear in order to get Kane away from ringside.
CM Punk from Chicago, IL weighing 222 lbs.
WWE World Heavyweight Champion
The ref is asking Batista if he is able to continue. Punk
asks him if he wants the match and Batista shoves Punk back. The ref waves to
someone at the announcer’s table and we go to commercial break.
Back to the ring, Garcia makes the introductions and the
match begins. Come ON, Punk take him out! Sorry, got carried away. Punk applies
a headlock but gets sent into the ropes and gets sent to the mat with a shoulder
block by Batista. Punk goes right back at Batista with forearms but gets caught
by a big boot. Batista goes for the cover and gets a two count before Punk kicks
out. Batista has Punk in the corner but the ref backs Batista up. Punk delivers
a neck breaker and Batista is down. Punk goes back at Batista with forearms and
has Batista down in the corner. Punk delivers a kick to the back of Batista’s
leg and goes for the cover but only gets a one count. Batista fights back but
Punk delivers a drop toehold and Batista is back down on the mat. Punk applies a
front face lock. Batista picks up Punk and drops him face first to the canvas.
Both men are slow getting back to their feet. Punk delivers a leg drop and gets
a two count before Batista gets a shoulder off the mat. Punk delivers more leg
drops and goes for a cross face move. Batista gets back to his feet but Punk
hangs on. Batista sends Punk over his head and to the mat. Punk delivers another
neck breaker and again goes for the cover getting the two count. Punk delivers a
knee to the face and tries for a pin but Batista throws Punk off after the count
of one. Batista sends Punk into the ring post. Batista attempts to go for a
squash in the corner but Punk delivers a drop toehold and Batista goes face
first into the turnbuckle. Punk delivers a high knee and a bulldog, goes for the
cover and gets a two count. Punk springboards off the top rope and Batista nails
Punk with a spine buster but Batista can’t go for the cover. Batista nails
Punk with shoulder blocks in the corner but when he goes at Punk again, Punk
catches him with a boot. Punk comes off the top turnbuckle but Batista gets out
of the way and Punk meets the canvas. Batista delivers a spear but JBL shows up
and the ref rings the bell. Time: 10 minutes.
Punk still has it and I don’t care who you put in the ring
with him, he shines like a star. I could have done without the interference but
perhaps this means that Cena and Batista are about to embark on a feud while
Punk faces off against JBL. JBL nails Batista and then Punk. Cena appears to
help out but JBL gets out of the way and Cena nails Batista. The two of them go
at it until the referees show up to break it up and we go off the air.
