Friday Night Smackdown
May 30, 2008 Ė Recap by Sassy
Smackdown is broadcast on the CW Network from Colorado
Ringside announcers: Michael Cole & Mick Foley
Ring announcer: Justin Roberts
The show opens with The Animal Batista entering the arena.
Batista wants to talk about his upcoming match with Heartbreak Kid Shawn
Michaels at One Night Stand. Batista promises to hurt Michaels. Smackdown
General Manager Vickie Guerrero, Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder interrupt him.
The fans arenít any happier to see her than I am. She wants to remind
everyone, including Batista, that the draft is in four weeks. Hawkins takes the
mic and he CAN talk! Batista
challenges Hawkins but Guerrero puts a stop to Hawkins & Ryder going to the
ring. There will be a tag team match later teaming Hawkins & Ryder against
Batista and anyone who wants to volunteer to be his partner. The fans see a
video of Survivor Series in 1990 with The Undertaker. Matt Hardy, WWEís United
States Champion, is heading toward the arena for a match and we go to commercial
Matt Hardy from Cameron, NC weighing 247 lbs.
WWE United States Champion
Elijah Burke from Jacksonville, FL weighing 230 lbs.
This is a non-title match. Burke is a decent wrestler but
Hardy has spent more time in the ring. The match starts off all Hardy and Hardy
goes for an early pin but Burke kicks out. Burke resorts to fists with Hardy
backed into the corner. Burke goes for a pin and gets a two count before Hardy
gets his shoulder off the mat. The two exchange forearm shots against the ropes
but Burke uses the top rope to hang up Hardy. Burke comes off the second rope
with a fist to the head and goes for the cover but Hardy kicks out at the count
of two. Hardy gets a handful of cornrows but the ref catches him. Both men are
down on the mat. Hardy delivers a Russian leg sweep and goes up to the second
rope, coming off to deliver an elbow to the back. Hardy tries to set up for the
side effect but Burke counters the move. Hardy manages to deliver the side
effect and goes for the cover but only gets a count of two. Hardy hits the twist
of fate, goes for the cover and gets the win. Time: 6 minutes.
Winner: Matt Hardy with a twist of fate.
The action was a little slower than I like but it was a
decent opening match for Smackdown. I do believe Burke can do a much better job
in the ring than he has done in the past. Every time he is in the ring, I expect
him to break loose and show the fans what he can do.
Lena Yada is backstage with M.V.P. MVP wants everyone to know
that he is still the biggest talent on the roster. Jamie Noble breaks in to tell
MVP that he keeps blaming all of his problems on everyone else and Noble says
that he has they are a lot alike. MVP calls Noble a half a man and Noble gets
angry and he wants to fight. Noble says that they need to do it out in the ring
and Noble says he will talk to Guerrero and make it happen and we go to
Finlay from Belfast, Northern Ireland weighing 233 lbs.
Chuck Palumbo from San Diego, CA weighing 280 lbs.
Palumbo has taken to wearing a really bad hat when he rides
his motorcycle to the ring. The sunglasses are enough inside an arena but the
hat? The bell rings and Palumbo is trying to get even for his loss to Finlay
last week. Palumbo begins the match with a beat down. Palumbo delivers a
belly-to-belly suplex but when Palumbo charges Finlay, Finlay gets out of the
way and Palumboís shoulder meets the metal ring post. Finlay goes to work on
the arm and shoulder. Palumbo flings Finlay out to the floor and then goes out
after him, but Finlay sends Palumbo shoulder first into the steel steps. Finlay
gets Palumbo back into the ring and goes for the cover but only gets a one
count. This time Palumbo nails Finlay in the corner, Finlay comes off the ropes
to meet Palumboís boot. Palumbo goes for the cover and gets a two count before
Finlay gets a shoulder off the mat. Palumbo again goes for a cover and again
gets a two count. Palumbo stops to argue with the ref and then comes off the
second rope but Finlay rolls out of the way and Palumbo meets the mat. Finlay
delivers a clothesline that sends Palumbo over the top rope and down to the
floor. Finlay goes out on the floor after him but Palumbo catches him and sends
him into the ring apron. Hornswoggle comes out long enough to cause a
distraction but Palumbo grabs a chain from his motorcycle and nails Finlay with
the chain. The ref rings the bell. Time: 5 minutes.
Winner: Finlay via disqualification
Again, I donít like the way that Palumboís character is
going and I donít think he makes a great heel. Palumbo has never used
wrestling talent in the ring and he hasnít been allowed to truly brawl. Finlay
and Hornswoggle are a great distraction for the crowd but I would prefer to see
Finlay actually work a match where he could wrestler.
The fans see a video of King of the Ring featuring The
Undertaker. Foley reminds the audience that Undertaker will be Edgeís guest on
The Cutting Edge tonight and we go to commercial break.
John Morrison from Los Angeles, CA weighing 219 lbs
One half of the WWE Tag Team Champions
CM Punk from Chicago, IL weighing 222 lbs.
Punk can take any match he is in and make it exciting.
Morrison has the ability to wrestler and move quickly in the ring but heís no
CM Punk. Unfortunately, it appears we will be blessed with Miz on the outside of
the ring sticking his nose in where it doesnít belong. The ref makes Miz get
out of the ring but he wonít get off the ring apron and when the ref sees that
Miz isnít listening, the ref throws him out of the arena. That works for me.
The bell rings and Punk immediately goes for a roll up but he only gets a one
count. Punk delivers a high kick to the head and Morrison crashes to the mat.
Morrison rolls out of the ring and uses the ropes to hang up Punk. Morrison goes
for a cover but only gets a one count. Punk tries for the GTS but Morrison
breaks free and comes off the ropes to receive a drop kick from Punk. Punk
delivers a high knee in the corner and then a bull dog before going for the
cover. Punk gets a two count. Punk power slams Morrison to the mat and goes for
the pin, getting another two count. Morrison delivers a high kick to the head
and goes for a cover, getting a two count. Punk sets up the GTS, nails it, goes
for the cover and gets the three count. Time: 2 minutes.
Winner: CM Punk with a GTS
I have to complain. Two wrestlers with talent and we get a
two minute match. I admit that Punk broke a sweat but it appeared they were just
warming up and the match was over.
The fans see a video of The Undertaker at Wrestlemania and we
go to commercial break.
Tag Team Match
The Animal Batista from Washington, DC, weighing 290 lbs.
Batista announces that he does not need a tag team partner.
The Big Show
Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder
With Vickie Guerrero at the top of the entrance ramp
Guerrero wants to know where Batistaís partner is. Since he
doesnít have a partner, she says it will be a handicap match. Batista says he
never said he didnít have a partner, just that he didnít need one. Enter The
Big Show who wheels Guerrero backstage and heads to the ring. Hawkins &
Ryder head up the ramp but are chased back to the ring by Show.
I am normally not fond of someone being forced to face
someone so much larger but this is Hawkins & Ryder and they deserve whatever
they get. Batista begins the match and does a good job of keeping his opponents
from tagging each other into the ring. Batista tags in Show and there is a tag
but Ryder doesnít seem to want to get in the ring. Show picks up Ryder by his
hair and tosses him into the ring. Ryder runs out of the ring and as Batista
goes out after him, Ryder slides back into the ring and tags in Hawkins. Hawkins
gets the jump on Batista but it doesnít take Batista long to be in charge of
the match again. Batista knocks Ryder off of the ring apron, delivers the spine
buster, goes for the Batista bomb, Show choke slams Hawkins, Batista goes for
the cover and gets the win.
Time: 3 minutes.
Winners: The Animal Batista & The Big Show with a Batista
Not a wrestling match but it was entertaining.
The audience sees a video of the Royal Rumble featuring The
Undertaker and HBK Shawn Michaels and we go to commercial break.
Cherry is backstage with a trainer and Maryse shows up to
brag about kicking Cherry in the face last week. Cherry has a shiner. MVP is
heading toward the arena and we go to commercial break.
M.V.P. weighing (I canít hear the announcer over the jeers
of the crowd)
Jamie Noble from Hanover, WV weighing 202 lbs.
MVP has improved since he first appeared in the WWE ring and
Noble has always been a big talent. MVP isnít going to work this match as a
wrestling match but Noble has a few quick moves the take MVP down to the canvas.
MVP delivers a semi spear, sends Noble into the ropes and slams him to the mat
as he comes off the ropes. MVP goes for the cover and gets a one count before
Noble gets a shoulder off the mat. MVP goes for a cover but he canít get the
three count. MVP sends Noble chest first into the corner post and then uses the
ropes to choke Noble. The ref backs MVP up but Noble doesnít get back to his
feet before MVP goes to work on him again. MVP puts Noble up on his shoulders
and drops him face first to the mat, but Noble nails MVP in the knee with a
kick. Noble delivers a kick to the back of MVPís head, then charges across the
ring and delivers a squash maneuver. Noble goes up to the top turnbuckle and
comes off to nail MVP in the back. Noble goes for the pin and gets a two count
before MVP kicks out. MVP drops Noble on the top rope and then delivers a kick
to the head, goes for the cover and gets the win. Time: 5 minutes.
Winner: M.V.P. with a head kick.
This was not really a wrestling match. Noble can do a much
better job in the ring than he did this time but he did have a few surprises for
The fans see a video of Wrestlemania featuring Undertaker and
Batista and we go to commercial break.
Shannon Moore from NC weighing 204 lbs. (already in the ring)
Vladimir Kozlov from Moscow weighing 302 lbs.
I donít know about the rest of the WWE wrestling fans out
there, but Iím a little tired of Kozlov showing up to beat up on wrestlers
much smaller than he is. It makes me wonder if Kozlov is capable of wrestling or
if he is just around for show. This match is no different than the matches we
have seen Kozlov in before. It is unfortunate that Moore isnít allowed to work
in an actual wrestling match. Moore does have talent when he is allowed to use
it. Time: 1 minute.
Winner: Vladimir Kozlov
We go to commercial break.
With Deuce & Domino
If you were as bad at wrestling as Maryse, you too would need
a lot of back up even against McCool. McCool goes for an early pin but only gets
a one count. McCool goes for a bridge, Maryse kicks out after the count of one.
Cherry appears at the top of the entrance ramp. McCool delivers a heel hook and
gets the win. Time: 3 minutes.
The audience sees a video of Smackdown 2007 featuring
Undertaker and Edge. We go to commercial break.
The Rated R Superstar appears for his Cutting Edge show. The
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Belt is hanging above the ring with a ladder
beneath it. The match at One Night Stand between Undertaker and Edge will be a
table, ladders and chairs match. Edge wants to show a highlight video of the
Undertaker in a TLC match but Edge then remembers that Undertaker has never been
in a TLC match. Edge has, however, been in several TLC matches. In case you
hadnít noticed, Iím skipping most of this chat fest by Edge. Edge introduces
a video of his own TLC experience. It was more of a commercial for One Night
Stand. Edge introduces his guest
tonight, The Undertaker. Undertaker appears minus hat and long coat. Edge
manages to stay on the opposite side of the ladder in the ring while Undertaker
keeps walking around the ladder, stalking Edge. Edge thanks Undertaker for
appearing on the show and says that Undertaker knows that it will be his last
appearance on Smackdown. Edge has Hawkins, Ryder, Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely
bring a casket down to the ring. Undertaker goes after Edge but Edge bails out
of the ring so Undertaker goes after the other four men outside the ring. Edge
hides behind the ring while Undertaker is getting a beat down against the
guardrail surrounding the audience. Undertaker fights his way out but Edge has a
chair in his hands. Undertaker picks up Guerrero to deliver a choke slam on the
casket but Edge nails Undertaker with the chair and itís back to a beat down
of Undertaker. They roll Undertaker back in the ring and Edge continues to beat
him with the chair as the casket is opened. They roll Undertaker into the casket
and shut the lid. Hawkins & Ryder hold down the lid as Edge tells Undertaker
his career is dead. Edge, mic still in hand, climbs up the ladder to reach the
title belt above the ring but the lights go out and Undertaker is on the ladder
opposite Edge. Undertaker sends Edge down into Neely & Guerrero and then
goes after Ryder & Hawkins. He tries to choke slam Edge through the table
but Hawkins gets slammed through the table instead.
