WWE
ECW
April 29, 2008 – recap by Sassy
Results for Backlash are posted on Monday Night Raw’s
report.
Last week on ECW –
In mixed tag team action, Kelly Kelly & Tommy Dreamer
defeated Layla & Mike Knox in 2 minutes.
Jimmy Wang Yang with Shannon Moore, defeated John
Morrison, one half of the WWE Tag Team Champions, with his tag team partner The
Miz in 5 minutes.
Kofi Kingston defeated The Gold Standard Shelton Benjamin
in 5 minutes.
The World’s Strongest Man Mark Henry defeated Nunzio in 2
minutes.
WWE’s
ECW is broadcast from Atlantic City, NJ
on
the Sci-fi Channel
Ringside announcers: Mike Adamle & Tazz
Ring announcer: Tony Chimel
Tazz informs the audience that tonight Kane will face Chavo
Guerrero and Bam Neely in a handicap match. Matt Striker will open his classroom
to the newest member of ECW, Mick Foley.
The Gold Standard Shelton Benjamin from Orangeburg, SC,
weighing 248 lbs.
Vs.
Kofi Kingston from Jamaica, weighing 217 lbs.
Audience favorite: Kofi Kingston
My favorite: Shelton Benjamin
Last week on ECW, Kingston defeated Benjamin in a one on one
match. Kingston has not lost a match since debuting on ECW. Benjamin has the mic
and he tells Kingston that his win last week was a fluke and Kingston’s luck
is about to run out. The bell rings and Benjamin goes for a quick roll up, but
Kingston kicks out. Another cover and Kingston kicks out. Benjamin body slams
Kingston to the mat several times and again goes for a cover. Benjamin gets a
two count. Benjamin goes to work on Kingston’s back but Kingston fights back.
Again Benjamin goes for a cover and again he gets a two count. Benjamin
continues his assault on Kingston, a back breaker and another pin attempt with
another two count. Benjamin sets Kingston up on the top turnbuckle, lands
several fists and then climbs up to the second rope. Kingston fights back and
sends Benjamin down to the mat. Kingston comes off the ropes with a cross body
block; Benjamin rolls through and gets another two count. Benjamin slams
Kingston to the mat, back first and goes for the cover again to get only a two
count. Kingston delivers the trouble in paradise kick, goes for the cover and
gets the three count.
Time:
4 minutes
Winner:
Kofi Kingston with trouble in paradise
Knowing that both of these men could probably wrestle in a
fantastic match makes the above match even more difficult to watch.
Commercial break.
Tommy Dreamer from Yonkers, NY, weighing 265 lbs.
Accompanied by Colin Delaney
Vs.
Mike Knox from Phoenix, AZ, weighing 293 lbs.
Audience favorite: Tommy Dreamer
My favorite: Tommy Dreamer
The last time Dreamer was supposed to face Knox, Dreamer got
sent home and Delaney got stuck in the ring with Knox. Dreamer goes after Knox
with fists to the face and head and then boots to the abdomen. Knox takes
Dreamer down with a clothesline and the audience is loudly chanting for Tommy as
Knox applies a side headlock. Knox drops Dreamer on the back of his head on the
mat and then goes for a cover. He gets a one count. Delaney checks on Tommy,
Knox reaches through the ropes and slaps Delaney in the head and then goes
outside the ring to slam Delaney into the steel steps. Dreamer comes through the
ropes to take Knox down with a kick, but when Dreamer comes out to check on
Delaney, Knox sends Dreamer face first into the steel ring post. Knox rolls
Dreamer back into the ring. Knox delivers a corkscrew neck breaker, goes for the
cover and gets the win.
Time:
3 minutes
Winner:
Mike Knox with a corkscrew neck breaker
And the matches are going from short to shorter. Mike Knox
may be getting a push but Tommy Dreamer and Colin Delaney both deserve better
matches than they have been receiving on WWE’s version of ECW.
Commercial break.
Matt Striker in suit and tie is in the middle of the ring
with his chalkboard. Striker tells the audience that spring break is over. I’m
glad Striker spelled his name for me on the chalkboard.
I do keep spelling it incorrectly. Although I wasn’t paying a lot of
attention to Striker’s ramblings, he did mention the name of Mike Adamle and
from the look of Adamle at the announcer’s table, I don’t think Adamle liked
what Striker said. Striker introduces Mick Foley, the newest addition to the
broadcast booth. Foley enters the arena and then the ring, stopping to slap fans
hands on the way to the ring. Foley thanks Striker for having him out and
Striker welcomes Foley to the classroom. Striker says he has put together a
little lesson for Foley since he is returning. Foley throws in his books.
Striker says if Foley didn’t have to appear on camera, he wouldn’t say
anything about Foley’s appearance because he is more suited for radio than
television. Striker makes fun of Foley’s teeth and physique and hair. Foley
says that he appreciates Striker’s guidance but Foley likes the way he looks.
Foley calls Striker a pretty boy and says that he has never entertained anyone.
Striker says that he is more adorable than a pretty boy. Foley reaches down
inside his pants and pulls out Mr. Socko and Foley says Socko is here to teach
the teacher a little English. And he does. Striker is down on them at. Foley
says, “class dismissed, have a nice day” and then throws his Mr. Socko at
Mike Adamle.
Commercial break.
CM Punk from Chicago, IL, weighing 225 lbs.
Mr. MITB
Vs.
Chuck Palumbo from San Diego, CA, weighing 280 lbs.
Accompanied to the ring by his motorcycle but he doesn’t come down the ramp,
he comes from the back on the floor.
Audience favorite: CM Punk
My favorite: CM Punk
Palumbo enters the ring and shoves Punk in the face before
the bell rings. The bell does ring and Palumbo backs Punk up against the corner
post. Punk has Palumbo around the waist but Palumbo backs Punk up into the
corner again and then turns but Punk manages to break free. Palumbo delivers a
knee to Punk’s gut and body slams him to the mat. Palumbo comes off the ropes
but Punk rolls out of the way and Palumbo misses the leg drop. A Palumbo sized
clothesline takes down punk when Palumbo catches Punk’s boot when Punk tries
for a kick. Palumbo delivers a back body drop and goes for the cover but can’t
get the two count. Palumbo applies a chin lock and then goes to work on Punk’s
back before going back to the chin lock. Punk back to his feet but Palumbo
delivers shoulder blocks to Punk’s midsection and then beats Punk down to the
mat. The referee has to back Palumbo up and Punk goes after Palumbo but the ref
gets in the way and Palumbo gets the advantage again. Palumbo continues to beat
Punk down in the corner and refuses to stop. The ref signals to ring the bell
and disqualifies Palumbo.
Time:
4 minutes
Winner:
CM Punk by disqualification
The ref explains to Palumbo that he has been disqualified and
raises Punk’s hand. Palumbo doesn’t leave the ring but trash talks Punk.
Punk goes after Palumbo, Palumbo throws Punk across the ring and then delivers a
clothesline. The ref gets down to protect Punk and whatever WWE is trying to do
with Palumbo just isn’t working for me. This
was one of the worst matches I have seen CM Punk in for a long time. But, we ARE
back to four minutes again!
Tazz and Adamle introduce the Raw Rebound where William
Regal, King of the Ring, considers himself disrespected and so he cuts off the
main event match before the end. The
Game Triple H did defeat Randy Orton and retain the WWE title. WWE continues to
do things that make me not care if I tune in or not. Monday Night Raw didn’t make me happy and I haven’t heard
a fan that was happy about the match being cut off.
Commercial break.
Adamle says that next week it will be the 100th
episode of ECW on the Sci-fi channel. Tazz informs the audience that next week
it will be Colin Delaney’s Contract On the Line. Tommy Dreamer will meet Mike
Knox in an Extreme Rules Match.
2 on 1 Handicap Match
Bam Neely & Chavo Guerrero
At a combined weight of 487 lbs.
Before Kane is introduced, Tazz asks Mike where he is going.
Adamle has take off his headset and is heading through the audience area.
Vs.
The Big Red Machine Kane
WWE ECW Champion
Audience favorite: Kane
My favorite: Kane
Someone should have offered to loan Neely wrestling attire
for this match up. Tazz goes by Tony Chimel, who pats Tazz on the back, and
walks out the same way Adamle walked out of the arena, leaving no one to call
the match in the ring. Guerrero is in the ring to face Kane as the bell rings
but Kane immediately goes to work on Guerrero. Guerrero fights back out of the
corner but Kane picks him up and slams him to the canvas. Neely yanks Guerrero
out of the ring and both of them are on the floor looking up at Kane and we go
to COMMERCIAL BREAK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MATCH! Back to the action, Guerrero
gets thrown across the ring by Kane, comes up with a kick to Kane’s knee and
Neely enters the ring. Kane looks thrilled to see Neely and he shows Neely just
how much he likes him. Guerrero nails Kane in the back from the ring apron and
the distraction gives Neely the upper hand. Neely tags in Guerrero who again
gets shoved across the ring and then is thrown over the top rope to the floor.
Kane goes outside the ring and rolls Guerrero back in but Guerrero delivers a
head butt through the ropes and then distracts the ref so that Neely can pull
Kane off the ring apron and to the floor. Guerrero goes out on the floor to work
on Kane’s leg and then tags in Neely who continues to work on Kane’s knee.
Neely tags in Guerrero and Guerrero slams Kane head first into the top
turnbuckle and then uses the ropes to work on Kane’s knee. Kane shoves
Guerrero back to the mat; Guerrero comes back at Kane and gets taken backward
but delivers a kick that drops Kane to the mat. As Guerrero comes toward Kane,
Kane sits up and scares Guerrero, but he comes off the ropes and gets taken to
the mat with a high back body drop and then a clothesline or two, and then a
sidewalk slam. Kane goes for the cover but Neely breaks it up. Kane delivers a
fist to Neely but gets caught by Guerrero. Neely enters the ring and Kane goes
after Neely, delivers a side slam, goes up to the top turnbuckle and comes off
to take Neely back down to the mat. Kane brings Guerrero into the ring but Kane
is attacked by Neely and then Neely tags in Guerrero who delivers a frog splash
and gets the three count.
Time:
1 minute before commercial break, 5 minutes after commercial break, 6 minutes
total.
Winner: Chavo Guerrero with a frog splash
&
Bam
Neely
It was the longest match of the evening but I wouldn’t go
as far as to call it a great match. Kane can do much better and even though
Guerrero’s cheating is admirable to wrestling fans, this wasn’t one of his
good matches. I won’t even try to judge how well Neely works in the ring
because this match didn’t tell me anything.
As far as Mike Adamle and Tazz are concerned, I heard
from another source that they ended up out in the parking lot but I didn’t see
that on the show.
