Friday Night Smackdown

January 4, 2008

Recap by Sassy

Friday Night Smackdown is being broadcast from Richmond, VA

on the CW network.

Ringside announcers: Michael Cole and Jonathan Coachman

Ring announcer: Justin Roberts

Backstage interviews: Lena Yada

Teddy Long pushes Vickie Guerrero to the arena. She isnít too ill to hold onto a mic Ė unfortunately for the fans. She says that if Batista or The Undertaker so much as lays a finger on Edge, their chances of getting a world championship match will go up in smoke. She has scheduled a beat the clock challenge. Whoever wins the beat the clock challenge will face Edge in a championship match at Royal Rumble. Among the wrestlers in the beat the clock match will be Finlay, Rey Mysterio, Batista, and The Undertaker. (Loudest pops for Mysterio and Undertaker.) She then introduces Smackdownís new color commentator, Jonathan Coachman.

NOTE: JBL has returned to the ring and Coach will be taking his place at the announcerís table.

Coach stands up in the announcerís chair to wave at the fans.

Beat the Clock Challenge Match

Finlay from Belfast, Northern Ireland, weighing 233 lbs.

accompanied to the ring by Hornswoggle

Vs.

MVP from Miami, FL, weighing 248 lbs.

Before Finlayís opponent is introduced, we see the results of Monday Night Rawís match McMahon set up with General Manager William Regal versus Hornswoggle and the fact that Regal refused to punch Hornswoggle in the face with the brass knuckles.

Audience favorite: Iím not sure

My favorite: I like them both

Winner: Finlay

Ė with a little help from Hornswoggle

Time: 9:46

I was surprised that MVP came out wrestling instead of trying to cheat. A nice show of skills by both men in the beginning of the match. Of course, MVP may not want to take on Finlay in a down and dirty match because Finlay knows his stuff in a street fight kind of situation. Finlay decides to slap MVP and MVP smacks Finlay in return. We now have more of a fighting match going on including Finlay throwing MVP out of the ring. MVP then chases Hornswoggle but I think Hornswoggle was trying to distract MVP and give Finlay a chance to get back on his feet. It didnít work and we go to

COMMERCIAL BREAK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MATCH Ė A TIMED MATCH NO LESS!

THATíS ONE!

Back from commercial break, we are at 5:10 on the clock and Finlay has MVP down in the middle of the ring. Coach and Cole note the match is now at 7:12 and note that it shouldnít be too difficult for competitors coming up in beat the clock matches to beat the time in this match. We are now up to 8:27 and still no sign of either man being able to pin the other for the three count. Finlay has a submission hold on MVP but MVP isnít tapping out. Finlay lets MVP up. MVP nails Finlay with a kick to the face but Finlay gets his leg on the bottom rope when MVP goes for the cover. Finlay has the shillelagh but it goes across the ring and MVP goes after as Hornswoggle uses the refereeís distraction with MVP to hand Finlay another shillelagh. Finlay nails MVP in the head, goes for the cover and gets the win.

As soon as the match is over, Vince McMahon comes down the ramp and into the ring to talk to Hornswoggle. He gets on his knees and gives Hornswoggle a hug and then high fives him. Finlay looks a little concerned.

We see a replay of parts of the match we just saw between Finlay and MVP.

I was impressed with the beginning of the match and the skill shown by both wrestlers and I certainly wasnít surprised when the match went beyond wrestling holds and into a fierce competition. A good match by both men in the ring even if Finlay did have to resort to a little outside help to win the match.

Commercial break.

Back from commercial break, WWE Smackdown of the Night: Jamie Noble and Michelle McCoolís date at the fancy French restaurant  and Nobleís magic trick that didnít turn out exactly as planned.

Mixed Tag Team Match

Chuck Palumbo and his motorcycle

&

Michelle McCool

Vs.

Kenny Dykstra

&

Victoria

Audience favorite: Iím not sure

My favorite: I like them all, but my favorites are Victoria and Chuck Ė and Chuckís motorcycle

Winners: Kenny Dykstra & Victoria

Iím not liking Chuckís heel turn these days, however, his baby face routine doesnít seem to be getting him any points with the fans. I donít think McCool is any match for Victoria who hasnít been getting enough chances to strut her stuff in the ring. Kenny has a problem with the ref getting down in position to count when Victoria has McCool down. McCoolís belly-to-belly suplex didnít have a lot of oomph to it. Dykstra does a little showboating for the fans and is rewarded by a chorus of boos. When Dykstra distracts McCool, Victoria hits the widowís peak and gets the cover and the three count.

Chuck has a tantrum in the middle of the ring and yells at McCool telling her that she costs them the match and he leaves her in the ring and heads out of the arena by himself.

Vickie is backstage with Teddy. She is reprimanding Teddy for not getting her coffee right and she sends him out to try again. Chavo Guerrero enters the office to tell Vickie that she is messing with the Guerrero family because of her relationship with Edge. She wants to know what Chavo wants and Chavo says he wants to roll back the hands of time and he wants something he canít have. He then leaves.

Commercial break.

Back from commercial break, The Beat the Clock Challenge time to beat is 9:46 set by Finlay in the first match of the evening.

Beat the Clock Challenge Match

Chavo Guerrero from El Paso, TX, weighing 215 lbs.

Vs.

Funaki from Japan, weighing 190 lbs.

Audience favorite: Iím not sure

My favorite: I like them both

Winner: Chavo Guerrero

Time: 6:02

Chavo showed up on ECW to challenge CM Punk for the ECW title. He was in a match with Punk to earn a chance at the ECW Championship but Punk beat Chavo.  Chavo did a good job on ECW this week and I donít expect him to do any less tonight. Funaki hasnít spent a lot of time in the ring but he isnít a bad wrestler.  Chavo goes in with force. He goes for an early roll up but Funaki kicks out. Chavo is watching the clock and perhaps not concentrating on the match. It gives Funaki a chance to get ahead of Chavo and he also tries for a pin but canít get the three count. Chavo is now going for the pin but canít get the win and he argues with the ref about the way he is counting. The clock is now at 7:19. Funaki tries for another roll up, but Chavo kicks out. Chavo counters with a pin move of his own, but Funaki kicks out. The clock is at 6:34 with Chavo again trying for a pin but he canít get the count. Funaki is back on his feet but misses a drop kick and Chavo goes for a bridge but Funaki powers out. The clock is at 5:48. Chavo goes for a roll up again but itís no good. Funaki goes for a roll up but Chavo grabs the bottom rope. Funaki goes for a pin again but Chavo kicks out, another quick cover by Funaki and again Chavo gets his shoulders up. Funaki comes off the second rope with a cross body block but only gets a two count. The clock is at 4:00. Chavo slams Funaki to the mat and gets the three count.

Not a bad match between these two men in the ring. Chavo doesnít seem to have lost his touch in the wrestling ring.

Batista is backstage making his way to the arena.

Commercial break.

Back from commercial break.

Beat the Clock Match

Batista from Washington, DC, weighing 290 lbs.

Vs.

Curt Hawkins from Long Island, NY, weighing 228 lbs.

Batista seems to be happy about his opponent in this match up. However, Vickie shows up on the monitor and tells Batista that Teddy has an announcement for his match. He will be facing Curt Hawkins AND Zach Ryder, the wrestlers formerly known as the Major Brothers. And it will be a two on one championship match.

If these two are a tag team, I donít understand why it was such a big deal for them not to be the ďMajor BrothersĒ anymore..

Vs.

Zach Ryder

Audience favorite: Batista

My favorite: Batista

Winner: No winner

Time: The time went over the best time of 6:02 set by Chavo Guerrero in his match against Funaki.

I donít care for the feud between Edge and Curt and Zach and Batista and The Undertaker. I was hoping  that Edge would return from his injury with a little less cowardice in his system however, that doesnít seem to be the case. The clock is at 3:12 and they are outside the ring, which may be a good idea if Batista can get just one man back inside the ring. It doesnít work and Batista is now down on the mat. The clock is at 2:24 and the crowd is chanting for Batista. The clock is now at 1:43 and Batista has not managed to get back to his feet. The clock is now at :58 and Batista is trying for a comeback and delivers a double spear to his two opponents. The clock is at :18 and Batista delivers a power slam and a spine buster. The buzzer goes off and Batista does not manage to beat the clock by pinning either opponent.

Commercial break.

Back from commercial break, Raw Rebound: Ric Flairís match with Triple H on Monday Night Raw. If Flair lost, his career would be over. If Triple H lost, he would be unable to be in the Royal Rumble match. Flair won the match by DQ after William Regal entered the arena and nailed Flair with the brass knuckles Regal had refused to use on Hornswoggle.

MVP is backstage with an icepack on his head and a cell phone to his ear. MVP says that Finlay cheated to beat him and that MVP is better than anyone including Finlay. MVP says he is going to shatter the glass ceiling in WWE and he is going to make history. He is better than Triple H and he is going to do what Triple H couldnít do, MVP is going to retire Ric Flair.

Rey Mysterio is backstage and he talks about his beat the clock coming up and how he canít prepare for the match because he doesnít know whom his opponent is going to be. Mysterio says that he has to beat the clock so he has to be fast and furious and he has been a World Champion before and he will do anything in his power to do it again.

The time to beat is 6:02, the time set by Chavo Guerrero in his match against Funaki.

Commercial break (didnít we just have one of those?).

Back from commercial break.

Deuce

&

Domino

from the other side of the tracks, at a combined weight of 465 lbs.

Accompanied to the ring by a nice ride and Cherry

Shannon Moore

&

Jimmy Wang Yang at a combined weight of 410 lbs.

Audience favorites: Shannon Moore & Jimmy Wang Yang

My favorites: Shannon Moore & Jimmy Wang Yang

Winners: Shannon Moore & Jimmy Wang Yang

Before the match begins, we see the match from three weeks ago where Moore and Yang beat the WWE tag title champions, Morrison and Miz. Deuce tosses Yang out of the ring and Cherry falls on her backside trying to get out of the way. Yang gets up and helps Cherry back to her feet, or skates, but is attacked from behind by Domino. I donít recall ever seeing Deuce and Domino actually wrestle in the ring and this match is no different. Yang and Moore, on the other hand, can wrestle. Moore nails Deuce twice in the face with a boot and those were some loud smacks. Moore rolls up Domino and gets the three count. Now Iíd like to see Moore and Yang with those WWE Tag Team titles around their waists.

Commercial break.

Back from commercial break, promo for the Best of 2007 WWE magazine.

The time to beat in the Beat the Clock Challenges is 6:02.

Beat the Clock Match

The Undertaker from Death Valley, weighing 299 lbs.

Vs.

Matt Striker from NY

Striker comes out in a referee uniform and says he is not The Undertakerís opponent, he is the special guest referee for this match.

Vs.

The Worldís Strongest Man Mark Henry from TX

Audience favorite: The Undertaker

My favorite: I like them both - I should clarify that is The Undertaker and Mark Henry

Winner: No winner thanks to Matt Striker

Time: The time was not to beat thanks to Matt Striker

We see parts of the match from three weeks ago when The Undertaker took on Big Daddy V and Mark Henry, pinning Mark Henry for the three count, however, V and Henry beat on Undertaker after the match was over.

Undertaker should have taken out Striker immediately making sure another referee shows up to ref this match. Striker canít seem to count over three when heís trying to get Henry to get off Undertaker in the corner. The match ends up on the floor with Undertaker keeping his eye on the clock. Undertaker sends Henry head first into the steel steps, moving the steps. Undertaker rolls back into the ring to break up the count out count before going back out after Henry on the floor. 3:18 is on the clock. The men are back in the ring and the clock is at 2:26. Henry is now working on Undertaker and he goes for the cover but he canít get the three count. The clock is down to 1:49. Undertaker hits Henry with a  DDT but both men are down and Undertaker canít get the cover. Undertaker goes old school but Henry catches him in a bear hug and the clock is now at :39. Undertaker hits Henry with a choke slam with the clock at :04 but Striker only counts to two and the buzzer goes off, meaning Undertaker did not beat the clock. Striker is out of the ring and running up the ramp and out of the way. Undertaker turns on Henry, power slams him to the mat and then hits him with a leg across the throat.

Now, letís seeÖMcMahon is in the building Ė heís already been in the ring. He canít show up and toss Vickie Guerrero out of the top floor of the building?

Commercial break.

Back from commercial break, we see the way Undertaker loses the beat the clock challenge due to Striker not counting to three when Undertaker had Henry pinned.

Chavo Guerreroís time of 6:02 is still the time to beat in the Beat the Clock challenge matches.

Former WWE Diva Search winner Lena Yada is backstage with Matt Striker. She asks about what just happened with The Undertaker. Striker says that Undertaker failed to beat the clock and failed to beat Mark Henry in the time allotted. Striker says that Undertaker tried to put his hands on Striker and if Undertaker ever tries it again, Striker will beat Undertaker into oblivion. (Pardon me while I choke a little here.) Striker says that V will also beat the Undertaker if he threatens Striker again.

Cole and Coach give us a promo for The Royal Rumble. There will be the standard Royal Rumble Battle Royal match, Jeff Hardy versus Randy Orton for the WWE Championship, Y2J Chris Jericho versus JBL, and the winner of tonightís Beat the Clock Challenge will meet Edge for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Chavo Guerrero has set the time at 6:02 in the Beat the Clock Challenge.

Commercial break.

Back from commercial break, promo for next weekís Monday Night Raw.

Final Beat the Clock Challenge Match

Rey Mysterio from San Diego, CA, weighing 165 lbs.

Vs.

Edge from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, weighing 250 lbs.

accompanied to the ring by his Edgeheads

Audience favorite: Rey Mysterio

My favorite: Rey Mysterio

Winner: Rey Mysterio

Time: 1:29 left on the clock

Rey Mysterio has made such an impact in the Hispanic WWE fan community that the word is WWE is looking for other talented Hispanic wrestlers. If Mysterio beats Edge and beats the clock, shouldnít Mysterio automatically be the new WWE Heavyweight Champion? Edge is going to spend his time ducking outside the ropes in order to run out the clock and then Edge bails out of the ring in order to waste more time. Edge back into the ring and then out of the ring and then back in to get caught by a hurricanrana. Mysterio goes for a cover but only gets a two count. The clock is at 4:13 and Edge tosses Mysterio out onto the floor to allow Hawkins and Ryder to work on Mysterio outside the ring.  Mysterio is back in the ring and here comes Batista to take out the Edgeheads outside the ring and onto the floor. No one said Batista couldnít touch them. Mysterio takes advantage of the distraction to try to get the 619, but Edge gets out of the way. The clock is now at 2:51 and Mysterio hits a cross body block but still canít get a three count. The clock is at 2:22 and Mysterio is down on the mat when The Undertaker shows up at the top of the entrance ramp, the arena goes black and when the lights come back on, Undertaker is gone, but Edge is set up for the 619. Mysterio hits it, comes off the ropes, frog splash and wins with 1:29 on the clock.

Rey Mysterio will now face Edge at the Royal Rumble for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

We see a replay of Batista and Undertaker coming out to cause major distractions during the match and the win by Mysterio.

And thatís all folks!
