In case you missed it, Brooke is no longer with WWE. Her
employment was terminated last week. Check
our WWE Weekly News Bytes this Friday for updates.
Before the show begins, we see CM Punk, ECW Champion, and
John Morrison who will be in a battle for the title tonight.
ECW is being broadcast from Bakersfield, CA on the SciFi
Channel.
Ringside announcers: Joey Styles and Tazz
Ring announcer: Tony Chimel
The Big Red Machine Kane, weighing 323 lbs.
Vs.
The World’s Strongest Man Mark Henry, weighing 392 lbs.,
from TX
Audience favorite: Kane
My favorite: Kane
Winner: Kane by DQ
The two men lock up in the ring; Kane sends a boot to the
midsection, then an uppercut to the jaw. Kane tries to send Henry into the
turnbuckle, but Henry gets the switch and Kane hits the corner instead. Henry
slams forearms into Kane’s back all around the ring. Kane fights back with
heavy rights. Kane comes off the ropes; Henry catches Kane and sends him to the
mat. He goes for the pin but doesn’t get the three count. Kane is down and
Henry works on his back with a boot. Henry picks Kane up and slams him to the
mat. Henry has Kane in the corner and chokes him. The ref breaks it up. Henry
slams Kane back first into the corner post, smashing into him.
Kane comes out swinging but Henry stops him with a knee. Henry sends Kane
into the opposite corner post, smashing him again. Henry stops to play the
audience and then waits for Kane to get to his feet. Kane does get to his feet
and stops Henry with a right uppercut, then a boot to the midsection and then
hits Henry with another uppercut. Henry sends a knee to Kane’s abdomen and
tosses him back against a corner post. Henry charges but Kane gets a boot up and
nails Henry in the face. As Henry reels away, Kane goes outside to climb to the
top turnbuckle. Kane hits Henry with a flying clothesline, sending Henry to the
mat. As Henry gets to his feet, Kane sends another right uppercut sending Henry
against the ring post. Kane
delivers a right forearm to Henry, then backs up, comes at Henry and hits him
with another forearm. Kane comes back at Henry but takes an elbow to the face.
Henry picks Kane up but Kane breaks free and goes for the choke slam. Henry gets
a knee up and stops Kane. Henry sends Kane to the mat with a clothesline. The
ref checks on Kane and Henry goes outside the ring toward the announcer’s
table, grabs a chair and comes back in. The
ref warns Henry then rings the bell. As Kane comes toward Henry, Henry nails him
in the midsection with the chair. Henry throws the chair down on the mat as the
ref declares Kane the winner by disqualification. Henry is not happy with the
call and he picks Kane up and body slams him onto the chair. We see a replay of
Henry bringing the chair back into the ring and the body slam onto the chair.
With the exception of Mark Henry taking the lazy way out
and using a chair, this was a decent match. Kane has been working lately with
several men much larger than himself but he works hard in the ring and is
impressive. Henry is much larger and slower in the ring but a force to be
reckoned with.
Styles tells us that tonight we will see a match between
Kelly Kelly and Layla. Tazz tells us that we will have an ECW Championship match
between CM Punk the current ECW Champion versus John Morrison who held the
title prior to suspension for drug use.
Commercial break.
Back from commercial break.
Jamie Noble, weighing 202 lbs., from Hanover, WV and
Smackdown
Vs.
Nunzio, weighing 170 lbs., from NY
Audience favorite: Nunzio
My favorite: I like them both
Winner: Jamie Noble via pinfall.
The two men lock up in the ring and we see wrestling moves!
Noble applies an arm lock to Nunzio and then proceeds to forget wrestling moves.
He throws some punches and sends Nunzio into the corner ring post. Nunzio
comes off with an elbow backing Noble up, but as Nunzio comes out of the corner,
Noble sends him to the mat with a body slam. Noble covers and goes for the pin
– he gets a two count. Noble sends an elbow to the back of Nunzio’s neck.
Nunzio uses the ropes to try to get back to his feet; Noble picks him up and
sends another elbow to the back of the neck. Again Nunzio crawls to the ropes to
try to get back to his feet, but Noble picks him up again and takes him down
with a back breaker. Noble goes for the pin and gets a two count. Noble covers
Nunzio again and gets a two count. Noble has Nunzio in a headlock and yells for
Nunzio to give up. Noble slams forearms into Nunzio’s face and head then sends
a boot to the side of the head. Nunzio is back up to his knees and as Noble
again tries to pick him up; he sends fists into Noble’s abdomen. Noble slams
an elbow into the back of Nunzio’s head and applies a chin lock. Nunzio makes
his way back up to his feet and sends a series of elbows into Noble’s
midsection. Noble again works on the back of Nunzio’s neck and head. Noble
sends Nunzio flying into a corner post and charges him. Nunzio gets a knee up
into Noble’s stomach, then goes up to the second rope and comes off with a leg
drop sending Noble to the mat. Nunzio goes for the pin but only gets a two
count. Nunzio picks up Noble and then climbs up on the first rope but Noble
comes back with a series of chops to Nunzio’s chest. Noble grabs Nunzio by the
leg and sends him crashing to the mat. Noble again delivers a backbreaker, picks
Nunzio up and drops him ribs first onto Noble’s knees and goes for the cover.
This time Noble gets the three count. We see a replay of the final moves in the
match and the pinfall.
This match was a good performance by both wrestlers.
Nunzio was in the ring with someone closer to his size but Jamie Noble is
good at both wrestling and fighting. That
last move involving the crashing of ribs into knees looked painful.
Styles reminds Tazz that the main event for this evening is
the championship match between Punk and Morrison. We then see a promo for John
Morrison – didn’t we see a lot of this stuff already?
We see Kelly backstage heading toward the ring.
Styles tells us that Kelly and Layla’s match is coming up after
Commercial break.
Back from commercial break, we see the Save Us 222 and The
Code Is The Answer video.
Layla from Miami, FL
accompanied to the ring by The Miz
Vs.
Kelly Kelly from Jacksonville, FL
Audience favorite: Kelly Kelly
My favorite: Neither one can wrestle
Winner: Layla – if anyone cares
We see the match, if you can call it that, between
Kelly and The Glamazon Beth Phoenix on Monday Night Raw. Before the match
begins, Miz has the mic. Not
that anyone is interested. Miz tells Kelly that he said he would make her
life miserable and he thought he was doing a great job. Last night he got her a
match with Phoenix and tonight she has a match with Layla. The bell rings and
Kelly walks over to argue with Miz, which is not a bright move considering
Layla is now behind her. Layla swings Kelly around and delivers a boot then
throws her down to the mat. Layla
proceeds to stomp on Kelly but when she tries to pick Kelly up, Kelly shoves
Layla back against the ropes. Layla comes off the ropes and again delivers a
boot to Kelly’s midsection sending her to the mat. Layla picks Kelly up by the
hair and tosses her to the other side of the ring. Layla delivers another boot
and grabs Kelly by the hair. Kelly kicks Layla across the ring but Layla charges
back and lands on Kelly, this time punching her in the face before picking her
up and slamming her to the mat. Layla goes for the cover, gets the three count
and the win. As Layla is announced the winner, Balls Mahoney enters the ring to
check on Kelly. Layla goes out of the ring to the safety – and I say this
jokingly – of The Miz. Miz acts like he’s going to get into the ring,
Mahoney invites him in, and Layla grabs Miz to stop him from entering the ring.
Speaking of no guts, Miz allows Layla to lead him around by the nose and keep
him from entering the ring. A
good thing for Miz. Mahoney could
beat him with one arm tied behind his back – and maybe one leg tied behind his
back. Miz continues to do what Miz does best and that is running off at the
mouth all the way out of the arena.
Since I have nothing good to say about this match, I
won’t say anything at all.
We are again reminded that we have an ECW Championship Match
tonight and we see a replay of the match where Punk wins the title from
Morrison.
Commercial break.
Back from commercial break, we see a promo of Rey Mysterio
and his debut in ECW in 1995 against Psicosis.
Both men are masked in the match. Tazz then shows us the new video of
Mysterio’s new video. Styles reminds us that this Friday on Smackdown, it will
be Mysterio versus Finlay.
Elijah Burke, weighing 230 lbs., from Jacksonville, FL
Vs.
Shannon Moore, weighing 204 lbs., from Whispering Pines,
NC and Smackdown
Audience favorite: Shannon Moore
My favorite: I like them both but think Burke has the
edge.
Winner: Elijah Burke via pinfall.
The two men get together in the ring and Burke backs Moore
into the ropes. The ref calls for a clean break, Moore swings Burke around into
the ropes. Moore makes a clean
break but Burke comes out swinging, sending Moore to the mat. Moore is back to
his feet and lands a punch then goes up in the air and comes at Burke with a
leg, dropping Burke to the mat. Moore sends Burke headfirst into the turnbuckle,
then goes up to the second rope and delivers a hurricanerana. Moore goes for the
cover but only gets a one count before Burke powers out. Moore goes after Burke
in the corner, but the ref backs Moore up. Moore delivers a boot to Burke’s
midsection and tries to send him across the ring to the opposite ring post but
Burke gets the switch. Moore slams back first into the corner post and when he
comes back out into the ring, Burke delivers a boot to the midsection. Burke
goes down to one knee and delivers a hard uppercut, sending Moore back to the
mat. Burke sets Moore on the ropes and puts a knee in Moore’s back.
The ref calls for a break. Burke comes off the opposite ropes and slides
across Moore’s back onto the floor and right to the announcer’s table to
make sure Styles and Tazz see how great Burke is. Burke is back in the ring.
Moore is getting to his feet but Burke sends Moore face first into the top
turnbuckle, then delivers a series of fists to the abdomen before the ref can
get him to break. As Burke goes back at Moore, Moore gets a boot up and stops
Burke. Moore comes out of the corner, fists flying. Burke picks up Moore and
slams him back first into the ring post. Burke sends a hard right to Moore’s
jaw, sending Moore down to the mat. Burke goes across the ring, runs back, grabs
the top ropes, goes up in the air and comes down with an elbow across Moore’s
chest. Burke drags Moore out of the
corner and goes for the pin. He only gets a two count before Moore manages to
get a shoulder up. Burke argues with the ref about the count then picks Moore up
again. Burke picks up Moore and drops him face first into the top turnbuckle.
Burke shoves down his knee pads and charges across the ring, landing the Elijah
express on Moore’s back. Moore is down again and again Burke goes for the cover. Burke
gets the three count.
Nice match. I don’t think Moore got to shine as much as
he usually does in a match but he did a good job of keeping up with Burke who
never ceases to amaze me. I think
every match I have seen with Burke has been a new experience. Burke is not
necessarily a high flying wrestler but he is very entertaining nonetheless.
We are again reminded about the ECW Championship match
tonight – Punk, current ECW Champ versus Morrison, previous ECW Champ.
Styles and Tazz discuss The Fabulous Moolah who recently
passed away. We see a video clip of Moolah. I would suggest the Kelly Kellys
and the Laylas in wrestling today go back and view footage of Moolah in the
ring. Moolah knew how to wrestle!
Commercial break.
Back from commercial break, we see Morrison backstage with
Miz. Morrison reminds us all that Miz has lost to Punk and Morrison in the last
couple of weeks and that the only think Miz can do is manage and bunch of girls
and Miz can’t even do that well. Miz tells Morrison he has just been lucky but
that his luck is about to run out.
We see a video recap of DX, Triple H and the Heartbreak Kid
Shawn Michaels, for one night only
on last night’s Monday Night Raw and the match where they defeated Umaga and
Randy Orton. We then see William Regal backstage with Orton. For whatever
reason, Orton has put a stop to HBK using sweet chin music at Survivor Series
against Orton. Orton can’t be disqualified or he will lose the title to HBK.
We see a promo for Survivor Series and the matches that are
involved.
ECW Championship Match
John Morrison, weighing 219 lbs., from Los Angeles, CA
Vs.
Commercial break before CM Punk is introduced.
Back from commercial break.
CM Punk, weighing 232
lbs., from Chicago, IL
ECW Champion
Audience favorite: CM Punk
My favorite: CM Punk
Winner: CM Punk via rollup. CM
Punk retains the ECW Championship.
Tazz is counting on Morrison winning the match, but I’m
rooting for Punk. I know both men
are great in the ring, but believe Punk is better than Morrison.
Morrison starts off by putting Punk in a headlock. Punk sends
Morrison into the ropes; Morrison comes off with an elbow, sending Punk to the
mat. Morrison goes off the ropes and across Punk, into the opposite ropes and
comes off to meet Punk’s knee in his abdomen.
Morrison is now down on the mat. Punk tries for a cover but only gets a
one count. Punk picks up Morrison and puts him in a wristlock, then delivers a
leg to Morrison’s chest, sending Morrison back down to the mat. As Punk goes
after Morrison, Morrison sends Punk into the corner post, but Punk manages to
grab the ropes and avoids contact with the post. Morrison is back on his feet
and goes after Punk, but Punk delivers a boot and then goes up to the top
turnbuckle. Punk flies over Morrison and tries for a roll up but Morrison grabs
the ropes and holds on. Morrison delivers a boot to Punk’s chest forcing Punk
to release his grip on Morrison. Morrison springboards off the second rope and
takes down Punk with a flying leg drop. Morrison goes for the cover and gets a
two count. Morrison lays into a downed Punk with fists to the head and face.
Morrison again tries to cover Punk and only gets a one count. Morrison goes to
work on Punk’s neck, keeping a knee in Punk’s back. Punk gets back to his
feet but Morrison sends him to his knees with a knee in the lower back and
continues the hold on the neck area of Punk. Punk is again down on the mat, now
up to a sitting position. Punk is back on his feet and he goes backward sending
Morrison into the corner post. Morrison maintains his hold on Punk. Punk goes
backward again, sending Morrison into the ring post, the goes forward and sends
Morrison over his head to the mat. Morrison charges Punk, Punk throws up his
boots, Morrison catches Punk and sends him through the ropes, Punk lands on the
ring apron and as Morrison comes after him, he sends a boot to the side of
Morrison’s head. Punk springboards off the top rope and sends Morrison to the
mat with a flying clothesline. Punk goes for the cover but only gets a two count
before Morrison gets a shoulder up. Morrison is back on his feet and he throws a
wild swing, which Punk ducks. Punk nails Morrison in the face with a forearm.
Punk blocks a fist thrown by Morrison, then hits him in the abdomen with another
fist. Punk comes off the ropes and hits Morrison in the face with a knee sending
Morrison back down to the mat. Morrison is back to his feet and Punk nails him
with a boot to the chest, then a knee again to the face and Morrison is back on
the mat. Punk sends Morrison off the ropes and delivers a flying boot to the
face as Morrison comes off the ropes. Morrison is up in the corner and Punk
charges him but Morrison gets his boots up and catches Punk. Morrison comes
after Punk and Punk delivers a body slam then goes for the cover. Punk gets a
two count. Punk picks Morrison off the mat and delivers several boots to the
forehead of Morrison before sending Morrison back to the mat. We see The Miz
coming down the entrance ramp as Morrison is back up in the corner. Punk
delivers a high knee to the face of Morrison before taking him down in a
bulldog. Punk again goes for the cover but only gets a two count.
Miz is now standing outside the ring watching the action. Punk and
Morrison are both to their feet and Morrison rakes the eyes of Punk. Morrison
springboards off the middle rope but Punk ducks the leg drop and Morrison lands
on the mat. Morrison is back on his feet and he charges Punk but Punk ducks out
of the way and sends Morrison to the mat. Punk goes for the roll up but only
gets a two count before Morrison takes Punk up off the mat. Punk has Morrison up
on his shoulders and it looks like he’s going for the GTS but Punk notices Miz
outside the ring. Miz holds his hands up in the air to show he is not involved
but the pause gives Morrison opportunity to get a switch on Punk and go for a
roll up. Morrison gets a two count. Morrison sends a flying boot into Punk’s
head and Punk is back down on the mat. Morrison goes for the cover and gets a
two count before Punk powers out. Morrison tries to set Punk up for the suplex
but Punk gets out of the move and lands behind Morrison. Punk has Morrison
around the waist but Morrison goes for the ropes and grabs them, sending Punk
down to the mat on his back. Morrison is now facing Miz who is still outside the
ring. As Morrison turns back to Punk, Miz throws his hat and hits Morrison in
the back, causing Morrison to turn back around. Morrison punts Miz’s hat into
the audience. The distraction gives
Punk time for a roll up and he gets the three count, wins the match and retains
the ECW title. Miz appears to be very pleased but I don’t know if it’s
because Punk won or because Morrison lost.
Great Championship match.
I was not so certain for a few seconds during the match that Morrison
would not come out the Champ. I’m
glad Punk won. He deserves it. It
was an entertaining fast moving match with great performances by both wrestlers.
To be perfectly honest, I am certain Miz couldn’t beat
either Punk or Morrison. He
doesn’t have the experience or the moves he needs to win.
