There have been thousands of hockey players the last 100 years making up the NHL, IHL, AHL, and all of the leagues that didnt survive those first crucial years plus colledges throughout America and Canada. The Top Black and White Photo forwards

Joe Malone---Phantom Joe Malone born on Feb. 28, 1890 in Sillery Quebec played between 1917-24. Malone produced some incredible statistics such as highest goals per game average in 1 season (2.20 for the canadiens in 1917-18) and most goals in 1 game (7 for the Bulldogs against the Toronto St.Pats). Malone played for the Canadiens, The Quebec Bulldogs and the Hamilton Tigers.
Charlie Conacher---Charlie Conacher born on Dec. 20, 1910 in Toronto played between 1929-41. Charlie had four seasons of more than 30 goals and had the hardest shot in the league. He played For Toronto, Detroit and the Americans.
Max Bentley---Sickly Max Bently born on March 1, 1920 in Delisle, Sask. played between 1940-54. Bentley was very sickly and suffered from a bad heart. Bentley once scored 4 goals in a single period (an NHL record). He was an uncanny stickhandler. Max played for the hawks, the leafs and the Rangers.
Ted Lindsay---Ted Lindsay was born on July 29, 1925 in Renfrew, Ontario,he played between 1944-65. Lindsay had a spirit like steel, It couldnt be broken. After leading the push for the players association Lindsay was traded to the Black Hawks. Lindsay played for Detroit and Chicago.
Newsy Lalonde---Newsy Lalonde was born on Oct. 31, 1887 in Cornwall Ont., he played between 1917-27. Lalonde was an excelent stick-handler and knew his way around the corners. Lalonde played for Montreal and the Americans.
Howie Morenz---Howie Morenz was born on June 21, 1902 in Mitchell, Ont., he played between 1923-37. Morenz was an excellent skater. He had a gaa of .49. Morenz played for Montreal Chicago and the Rangers.
Joe Hall--- Joe Hall was born in England but learned his rough brand of hockey in western Canada. Hall died of influenza during the Stanley cup finals followed by other players. The Cup finals were canceled at 2 games a piece between Seatle and Montreal.
Frank Nighbor---Frank nighbor was one of hockeys best two-way centers. In 13 years with Ottawa, he walked off with one Hart Trophy, two Lady Byngs, and four Stanley Cups.
Odie Cleghorn--- In 1918-19 Canadien Odie Cleghorn led the NHL with 24 goals. He later played for the NHL's Pittsburgh Pirates.
Sprague Cleghorn---Sprague Cleghhorn was a Montreal native and a big capable leader. He also had an attitude. When he was traded, he saw no reason why and took out his anger on the players injuring Eddie Gerard Frank Nighbor and Cy Denney.
Cy Denney---A rough and tumble player despite his small stature, sometimes he was cast into an enforcers role. Cy was teamed up with Harry
Corbett Denney---Corbett, a forward who could play center or left wing, enjoyed his best years with Toronto, when he pivoted a line with Reg Noble and Babe Dye.

Eddie Shore--Eddie shore, born on Nov. 25, 1902 in Ft. Qu'appelle, Sask. played between 1926-40. Shore scored 12 goals in his rookie season and set an NHL record for penalty minutes with165 in 44 games. Shore perfected a peculiar crouch in his skating stride that made him all but impossible to knock down. Shore played for Boston and the Americans.
Doug Harvey--Doug Harvey, born on Dec. 19, 1924 in montreal Canada played between 1947-69. Doug was an excellent play maker who changed the way hockey was played by refusing to lug the puck up the ice, but to take it near his own net attracting a forechecker then lay a perfect pass to ignite an attack. In 1954-55 he earned a record 43 assists. Harvey played for montreal, the rangers, Detroit, and the Blues.
Red Kelly--Red Kelly, born on July 9, 1927 in Simcoe, Ontario played between 1947-67. The gentleman tobacco farmer was a highly under estimated player. Red scored 162 goals and was an excelent forward as well. Although Kelly was a light heavy weight boxing champ he rarely retalliated although when he did he was a devistating fighter. Squib Walker, a scout for the leafs bet that kellys placid dimeanor would limit him to 20 games. He played for 20 years.Kelly played for Detroit and Toronto.
Tim Horton--Tim Horton, born on Jan. 12, 1930 in Cockrane Ontario played between 1952-74. Horton was a physical powerhouse as well as an excelent player. He had a devastating slapshot and great hockey sense. Horton played for Toronto, the Rangers, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo.
Dit Clapper--Dit Clapper, born on Feb. 9, 1907 in Newmarket, Ontario played from 1927-47. Dit was a solid defenseman. Clapper scored 41 goals in 44 games. The key of his game was that he simply made no mistakes. Clapper played for Boston.

George Hainsworth--George Hainsworth, born on June 26' 1895 in Toronto played between 1926-37. Little George Hainsworth 5 foot 5 was almost mechanical in his goaltending. His statistics were downright uncanny. He posted 22 shutouts in 1 season, retired with a 1.91 goals against average, and had a 1.93 goals against average in the playoffs. Surprisingly, he never finished as a first or second team all-star although he won the Vezina 3 times. George played for Montreal and Toronto.
Terry Sawchuk--Terry Sawchuk, born on Dec. 28, 1929 in Winnipeg played between 1950-70. Terry was a reflex goalie. He relied little on angles, but on lightning fast movements. He received over 400 stitches throughout his career. Terry played for Detroit, Los Angeles, Boston, Toronto, and the rangers.
Jacques Plante--Jacques Plante, born on Jan. 17, 1929 in Mont Carmel, Quebec played between 1953-73. He began to coin the ability of the goalie to leave the creaese and play the puck. He was also the first goalie to dive on loose pucks. Plante also invented and used the first goalie helmet. Plante played for Montreal, the Rangers, St.Louis, Toronto and Boston.
Bill Durnan--Bill Durnan, born onJan. 22, 1915 in Toronto played between 1943-50. Bill used a trick he had once learned as a child. Being ambidextrious, he would switch the hand in which he was holding the stick so the shooter would always be facing his quick glove hand. Durnan was the last goalie ever to be captain sinc the league was prompted to outlaw goalies becoming captains because of his many excursions to the refs crease. Durnan played for Montreal

OTTAWA HOCKEY CLUB---In 1891 the Ottawa hockey club, led by P.D. Ross was the champion of the new O.H.A.
WINGED WHEELERS---In the late 19th century, the Montreal Athletic Associations team was known as the winged wheelers. Its insignia was later copied by the Detroit Red Wings
MONTREAL VICTORIAS---The 1896 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Victorias featured an early rushing defenseman, captain Mike Grant. The Victorias captured Stanley Cips in four straight seasons (1895-98)
OTTAWA SLVER SEVEN---The fabled
MONTREAL SHAMROCKS---In 1899 The Montreal Shamrocks clinched their CAHL title against the perennial favorite,The Montreal Victorias. The Shamrocks won it on a goal by captain Harry Trihey
MONTREAL CANADIENS---With the talents of Newsy Lalonde and Didier Pitre the 1912-13 led the NHA at the seasons half way mark. However, the team stumbled in the second half and finished next to last.
QUEBEC BULLDOGS---The 1913 Stanley Cup-winning Quebec Bulldogs were a star-studded group, boasting future Hall of Famers Tommy Smith, Joe Malone and
TORONTO BLUESHIRTS---After 21 years of Stanley Cup play, the city of Toronto finally claimed the Lord's Mug. The 1924 Blueshirts fought off challenges from Victoria and the Canadiens to win the prize.
SEATTLE METROPOLITANS---In 1917, the Seattle Metropolitans of the PCHL became the first United States team ever to win the Stanley Cup. They would never win another.
TORONTO ARENAS---Before the Maple Leafs made an indelible print on pro hockey, several important Toronto teams preceded them. One of the best was the Toronto Arenas, winners of the 1918 Stanley Cup. The Arenas defeated Vancouver for the mug.
OTTAWA SENATOR---The 1921 Ottawa Senators boasted some of hockeys top players, including goalie Clint Benedict, defenseman Eddie Gerard, and forwards Frank Neighbor and Cy Denney. There first Stanley Cup as an NHL team came in 1920.
TORONTO ST.PATS---A strong St.Pats team featured defenseman Hap Day, who later became coach of the leafs.
VICTORIA COUGARS---The Victoria Cougars, one of the great western hockey teams, won the cup in 1925. They were managed by Lester Patrick.
NEW YORK AMERICANS---New York bootlegger
MONTREAL MAROONS---Though lesser known than the Canadiens, the Montreal Maroons won the Stanley Cup in 1926. Clint Benedict starred in goal.
NEW YORK RANGERS---The 1927-28 were the first team to bring a Stanley Cup to New York. The Blueshirts were spearheaded by the line of Frank Boucher and Bill and Bun Cook, who each finished in the top 10 in scoring. Boucher tallied 23 goals, Bill knocked in 18, and Bun rang up 14.
DETROIT---Detroits first NHL team came about in 1926, when the Victoria Cougars of the WHL moved to the motor city. The 1927-28 edition featured goalie Hap Holmes and coach Jack Adams.
BOSTON BRUINS--- The 1929 Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins featured a powerfull defense, led by Eddie Shore and a productive offense, led by Dit Clapper.
PHILADELPHIA QUAKERS---The 1930-31 Philadelphia Quakers posted an embarrassing 4-36-4 record. The Quakers, owned by boxing champion Benny Leonard, at least knew how to fight. On Christmas Day, they got into such a scuffle with the Bruins that police were called in to stop the savagry. The Quakers were officially laid to rest after the season. (See picture above)
