Finding Birds in Costa Rica

Welcome to Finding Birds in Costa Rica, a website dedicated to birders interested in Costa Rica. Here you’ll find a complete country bird list following the latest eBird/Clements taxonomy, a list of regional endemics, a photo gallery containing images of more than 500 species, and much more. So, read on, explore, and enjoy!

And if you’re coming to Costa Rica to look for birds, you’ll definitely want to have a copy of the new field identification guide that Robert Dean and I have published with Zona Tropical and Cornell University Press. It’s small enough to fit in your back pocket, yet deals with essentially all the species that one might see from the mainland. Robert’s paintings alone will often suffice for identifying the bird you have just seen, but, on the facing page of each plate, I have also provided range maps and texts that should help to clinch the ID. (Click here to see a sample page layout.) Of course, the book is available at Amazon, but you might want to consider ordering through ABA Sales, so that some of the proceeds will go towards supporting birding activities and conservation efforts.

Not sure you’ll be able to find and identify enough birds on your own? Consider the advantages of a private guide with more than 30 years of experience in Costa Rica, and who just happens to be the author of the abovementioned field guide. Whether you're a first-time visitor to the neotropics, a seasoned world birder with a "wish list", or anywhere in between, I'd be delighted to help you find the birds you're looking for. Please feel free to inquire about my rates and availability at gonebirdingcr@gmail.com. And let’s go birding!
