Five Eyes
In Hans' old mill his three black cats
watch the bins for thieving rats.
Whisker and claw, they crouch in the night,
their five eyes smouldering green and bright:
squeaks from the flour sacks, squeaks from where
the cold wind stirs on the empty stair,
squeaking and scampering everywhere.
Then down they pounce, now in, now out,
at whisking tail, and sniffling snout;
while lean old Hans he snores away
till peep of light at break of day;
Then he climbs to his cracking mill,
out comes his cats all grey with meal-
Jekkel, and Jessup, and one-eyed Jill.

On a cat, ageing
He blinks upon the hearth-rug,
and yawns in deep content,
accepting all the comforts
that Providence has sent.
Louder he purrs, and louder,
in one glad hymn of praise
for all the night's adventures,
for quiet, restful days.
Life will go on for ever,
with all that cat can wish:
warmth and the glad procession
of fish and milk and fish.
Only-the thought disturbs him-
he's noticed once or twice,
the times are somehow breeding
a nimbler race of mice.
