DISTRICT 24-AAAA IS RETOOLED BY UIL
The University Interscholastic League ("UIL") announced its biannual realignment for
football and basketball on February 1. When the dust settled, the Bay City Blackcats
found themselves remaining in a retooled, and significantly toughened district 24-AAAA.
Gone are the long-time rival Wharton Tigers, who will go from an out-manned AAAA team to a AAA
power in district 23-AAA (where they join a dominant Sealy team), while the Calhoun
Sandcrabs, winless in 1999, move to the South Texas district 29-AAAA. Replacing
Wharton and Calhoun are the Angleton Wildcats, formerly of 24-AAAAA. The Wildcats
were no pushovers in a 5A district that included Galveston Ball and the Clear Lake
schools, and should be legitimate playoff contenders in the new 24-AAAA. Here, then are the
Blackcats' district competitors in 2000-2002:
ANGLETON WILDCATS
BRAZOSPORT EXPORTERS
COLUMBIA ROUGHNECKS
EL CAMPO RICEBIRDS
LAMAR CONSOLIDATED MUSTANGS

JONES JOINS BEARCATS
Bay City Blackcat running back Robert Jones signed with the Sam
Houston State Bearcats of the Southland Conference on February 2, the
national signing day. Jones scored 12 touchdowns and rushed for over
600 yards in an injury-plagued 1999 season for the Blackcats. Jones was
a leading rusher for Bay City in the team's 1998 run to the Class 4A-Division I
state finals. Good luck in Huntsville, Robert!
