do we know what prayer is ?
it is said that when we pray
we talk to God...
but when we meditate
we listen...
"Prayer is the soul's sincere desire, Uttered of unexpressed; The motion of a hidden fire, That trembles in the breast." ....James Montgomery, What Is Prayer?
Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life;
Such a Way, as gives us breath:
Such a Truth, as ends all strife;
And such a Life, as killeth death.
Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength;
Such a Light, as shows a feast:
Such a Feast, as mends in length:
Such a Strength, as makes his guest.
Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:
Such a Joy, as none can move:
Such a Love, as none can part:
Such a Heart, as joys in love.
~ George Herbert, (1593-1633)
A Native American Prayer
Oh Great Spirit,
whose voice I hear in the winds,
and whose breath gives life to all the world
-hear me-
I come before you, one of your children.
I am small and weak.
I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold
the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made,
my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise, so that I may know the things
you have taught my People.
The lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
I seek strength not to be superior to my brothers,
but to be able to fight my greatest enemy,
myself.
Make me ever ready to come to you,
with clean hands and straight eyes,
so when life fades as a fading sunset,
my spirit may come to you without shame.
Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small
to be made into a burden.....
...Corrie ten Boom
God, grant me serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
~Reinhold Niebuhr~
There are two kinds of people in the world;
those who say to God, 'Thy will be done',
and those to whom God says,
'Go ahead, then, have it your way'.
~C. S. Lewis~
~Thank God For Little ThingsThank you, God, for little things
That often come our way
The things we take for granted
But dont mention when we pray
The unexpected courtesy,
The thoughtful, kindly deed
A hand reached out to help us
In the time of sudden need
Oh make us more aware, dear God.
Of daily little graces
That come to us with "sweet surprise"
From never-dreamed-of places.
~Helen Steiner Rice
