When I first heard of Riverdogs "Absolutely Live" CD, it was through an import company and the price was a hefty $30.00. A friend told me "Don't bother...it's only a live album" So, I listened to him, took his advice into consideration...and of course bought the CD anyways!!
This is far more than an average live CD. For starters, half of the cd features new songs, so it's worth the price of admission right there !! Some of these songs rank among my alltime favorite Riverdogs songs. It starts with the rocking, toe-tapping opening number "Can't Have You". A song that shows what a solid drummer Ronnie Ciago is. Without trying to 'show off', I think Ronnie proves himself to have a great style. "Toy Soldier" is represented here with a version that proves to all who may have had a doubt what an amazing singer Rob Lamothe is. It's a very stripped down version that starts with just Rob and a little guitar and kicks into a very melodic mid-tempo. "Raining All Over" is simply my favorite Riverdogs song of all time. A sweet ballad about turning the misfortune of a rainy day into the blessing of spending a lazy day with the one you love. No matter how many times I hear it, this song always takes me away to another place, which is exactly what a great song should do. Just as the tempo starts to slow down, the boys kick right back into high gear with "Sweet Mystery", a rocking little number that's sure to get you moving. "If Love Is The Truth" is another slow song that shows the wonderful chemistry of this band with great harmony vocals. On "I Believe", Rob shares the mike with bassist Cary Beare who helps sing the pre choruses. The CD is even complete with their version of "House Of The Rising Sun" a blusey new version of the old classic.
This CD was a way for the Riverdogs to put out some new material without having to slave away in the recording studio for months on end. They did it the way bands USED to do it... they plugged in their instruments and just played !! These songs have a charm and a magic that I just don't think would have come across half as well in the studio. Some bands strive for months & months in the studio to achieve what the Riverdogs did in one hour on stage.
