Chapter2 1 & 2

Heaven In Your Eyes- Chapters 1-2

PART ONE

"I'm sorry, Caitlin, I just don't think it's going to work out anymore."

The words I had dreaded for ten months during my relationship with Corey suddenly sprang from his lips and hit me like a ton of bricks. It was the last thing I had expected hearing when he called me up that evening.

"It's not really your fault," his voice broke through my thoughts, "it's more a personal thing. I'm just not sure I love you anymore, and I need some time alone to think some things through. Sorry." he paused, giving me time to respond.

"I-uh-whoa," I stammered, mindlessly staring off into space. I couldn't cry, just couldn't. So instead I sat there silently, holding the phone.

"You gonna be ok?" his voice came through the tense silence.

"mm-hmm," I didn't trust myself to give a longer answer, in case I did something stupid.

"uh, I gotta go. Sorry to do this to you. Don't let it mean we can't still be friends. I guess I'll see ya around." Corey fumbled.

"Yeah, see ya." I replied.

Still shocked, I hung up the phone and stared into nothingness, hugging my favourite teddy bear, which Corey had once given me as a one-month anniversary present. Suddenly, the ringing of the telephone beside my bed broke my trance.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Um, hi," it was Corey again.

My heart leapt, "Maybe he's changed his mind," I thought.

"Uh, you still have my Smashmouth CD. Can I get it back?" he asked.

That was when I knew it was over. "Yeah. I'll call you. Bye."

"Ok, bye." Corey once again hung up.

I went back to sitting and staring, when the phone rang yet again. I frowned.

"Don't tell me he left something else here," I muttered, "I'll let someone else answer."

The ringing ceased, and I assumed someone else had picked up.

"Caitlin!" my mother called up the stairs, "Phone! It's Nick!"

Nick. Him I could handle. Nickolas Carter had been my best friend longer than I could remember. Our mothers were friends, and we had always lived down the street from each other. We were the same age, 16 that summer. Our families sometimes joked that we were joined at the hip, we told each other EVERYTHING, and were sometimes inseperable. We had basically grown up together. I could count on him for a shoulder to cry on, just to have some fun, or almost anything else. The fact that he was in the Backstreet Boys didn't make ANY difference. I picked up the phone and called down to my mom to hang up the extension.

"Hello?" I said shakily

"Hey, Caits! What's up?" Nick cheerfully asked.

I sighed,"Nothing."

"Oh.....Is everything ok?" That was Nick for you. He could read me like a book. I had barely said two words, and already he could sense something was wrong.

"Not exactly....." my voice trailed off as I struggled to blink back the tears I had known would come.

"Why, what's wrong?" his tone of voice changed, becoming increasingly concerned.

Gradually the whole story came pouring out, and by the end I was crying. He knew how much my relationship with Corey had meant to me.

"You poor thing! I'm gonna come over." Nick informed me.

"You don't have to do that...." but before I could finish, he had hung up.

PART TWO

I was laying on my bed flipping through a magazine, but not really looking at it, when Nick arrived. He sat down besides me.

"Hey, you," Nick greeted me.

I sat up to face him, my eyes red, my face tearstained, and he pulled me into a hug, softly resting my head on his shoulder. Unable to stop, my tears left a damp spot on his shirt.

"I brought you somethin," Nick spoke softly when I finally pulled away, "It's in the hallway, I'll get it."

He went into the hallway and came back in carrying a container of Haagen Dazs ice cream, and a small teddy bear.

"Comfort food," he guestured to his girts, "And this little guy is better than any boyfriend. If he doesn't treat you right, all you do is cut off his head and pull out all his stuffing!"

I cracked a small smil, "Thanks, but where'd you get this stuff on such short notice?"

"Well, the ice cream was in our freezer, it's a miracle it hasn't been touched," Nick explained, "And the teedy is actually Angel's. She's got a million, don't tell and she'll never miss it."

"It'll be out little secret." I smiled.

"Now there's the smile I love!" he commented, "Feeling a little better now?"

"Sorta.....ugh, why'd he have to do this ot me now?" I didn't really expect that question to be answered.

"Just don't think about him. Guys suck. I brought us a movie," Nick added.

"Which one?" I asked him. He knew how much I loved movies.

"Dirty Dancing," he also knew how much I loved THAT movie.

"Thanx, let's go watch it!" I suggested.

"Well, I suppose,"Nick, however, didn't particularly like that movie, "Go wash your face up and I"ll meet ya downstairs."

"K. Help up?" I looked up at him, my hand outstretched.

Nick sighed and helped me to my feet, "C'mon, you."

"Meet ya downstairs."

Nick and I sat on the couch in my living room, a bowl of buttered popcorn between us, watching the movie. Everything was fine until the last scene, where they dance together in front of everyone, rolled around. Silently, tears began to roll down my cheeks.

"Aw, what's the matter now?" Nick looked over at me and a look of concern passed over his face.

"Nothing.....It's just....."my voice trailed off, "You'll think it's stupid."

"You can tell me, yo know I'm not gonna think you're stupid," Nick brushed a tear off my cheek, "I don't like to see ya like this! Cheer up! Now, what is it?"

"Well.....This was the movie I watched with Corey on our first official actual 'date', and ever since that, 'I've Had the Time of my Life' has been our song....." I remembered.

"Stop thinking about that jerk. I'd say you're a lost cause tonight, why don't we head on upstairs and get you to bed?" Nick suggested.

"Yeah, Ok." I spoke through tears.

Nick waited outside my bedroom door as I got changed and ready for bed. He came in when I was ready, and sat on the foot of my bed.

"Now try to get some sleep, ok? Don't even think about thinking about Corey, and call me in the morning, alright?" Nick instructed, "I'm sure you'll feel better then. Sweet dreams."

"'Night," I responded, "Thanx."

He hugged me, and I gave him a soft kiss on the cheek, yet in a purely platonic way.
