Problem Solving Strategies

• Information Technology – The research and development of technology applied to the transfer of information between computers and networks.
• Personal Computers – Electronic devices for processing and retaining data.
• Needs Assesment – The ability to examine and determine what a user requires of a computer or network based on given criteria.
• Operating Systems – Program code designed to interpret application commands and allow the user to interface with the computer.
• High-level Language versus Machine Language – High level language is the language that is most comfortable for the user to interface with the computer as opposed to Machine Language which is composed of a sequence of simple ‘bits’ of information.
• Graphic User Interface – A visual display presented by the operating system that allows the user to interface with the computer using graphical representations of commands as opposed to having to memorize and learn a variety of command sequences.
• WWW vs. Internet – The WWW is the internet spread across the global computer community whereas the internet can refer to just one section of the WWW network.
• TCP/IP – A networking protocol most commonly used on the internet to transfer data packets.
• Ethernet/Fast Ethernet – Ethernet is a type of network connection, usually using Cat-5 cabling and RJ-45 connectors traveling at 10 megabits per second. Fast Ethernet is capable of transferring data at 100 Mbit/s or 1000 Mbit/s.
• Bandwidths and Speed – Bandwidth is a measure of the maximum amount of data that can travel across a connection. It works similar to a pipeline in that the more band width you have, the more data that can travel, and the faster it can travel.
• ISPs – Companies that buy a block of IP addresses and allow users to access the global internet via their servers, assigning each user a unique address.
• Streaming Video – Connections with a high enough bandwidth can receive streaming video which is coded, uploaded, transferred across the internet, then received and decoded by the end user’s machine in real time.
&147; MPG – A popular format for audio and visual media that compresses movie and audio in a medium quality for playback.
• AVIs – Movie files that are lower quality than MPEG files, but also take up much less speace.
• Virtual Environments – The shell from one operates on the internet. This includes connection type, Operating System, and internet browsing software.
• Visual Basic – A programming Language used to write simple applications.
• C++ - A coding language that involves high level commands and can be used to generate operating system software.
• Object Oriented programming – Programming designed to incorporate several separate applications and interface them using related variables.
• Browser – A program designed to access and decode internet page languages for viewing. This may be achieved by the help of a “plug-in” utility.
• HTML – A simple language used for displaying text, tables, and linking to images, sounds, and animations. Generally HyperText Markup Language is universally readable and is flexible across a variety of Platforms.
• Static Web Page – A webpage in which the user can view posted information, but provides no way for the user to input information into the website or a related database.
• Interactive Web Page – A webpage in which the user can input changes into the website affecting how things are viewed, or enter information to be retrieved by the webmaster from a linked database.
• URL – Uniform Resource Locator; It is simply an address for a remote computer that can be accessed across the internet. Each server on the internet has a unique URL.
