Listen to UsUsCome See UsOur Ugly FacesWhat We Like

(Update 9-16-06) It seems with every year that passes, Shades of Random has to reinvent ourselves due to things that are beyond our control. Due to what can only be described as ‘creative differences,’ Matt has decided to part ways with us. It’s been said before, by us as well as others, but the show must go on. Any shows we currently have scheduled we will still be playing, with or without Matt. We will still be opening for Trivium on Friday, 10/13 at Peabody’s Down Under ($16), where you might see Matt play with us (which would be his last gig with SOR), or you might see someone else up there with us. I’ll just say that we do have a plan B, as well as a plan C and D, just in case. This will likely be our last gig of 2006, so do your best to come out and support us, and give Matt a proper send-off (if he plays with us, of course).

Later,
Tom

(Update 9-14-06): So there haven't been any updates in four months. A lot happens in four months, so I'm kind of a jerk for not updating. I haven't posted any upcoming shows, or the shows we've played, or status on the demo, or the band for that matter.

Well first, I'll talk about the show we just played. It was our first time playing The Cove in Geneva-on-the-Lake, and we played on the main stage at 9:20. What made this show stand out was that Matt wasn't able to do it with us, so we had our good friend and producer of our CD, Bob (also of the band Nihility fill in for him, and he did a damn fine job. Here's the set we played:

-Squirrels of the Apocalypse
-Master of Puppets
-Road to Rock-n-Roll
-Take it Slow
-War Within Sanity
-Behind the Rows

I'll be putting together Behind the Shows Episode 6 this weekend. Speaking of Behind the Shows, where the hell are episodes 4 & 5? Well I was having trouble hosting them, but that's another thing I pledge to accomplish within the next week or so.

Okay, as far as the demo goes, it's all recorded, so that aspect is done. We were hoping it would be out this month, in time for our last show, in fact, but since Bob had to fill in, he had to put off mixing our CD in order to learn our music and have practices with us, etc. So now the goal is to have it mixed, and the MP3s available this month, with the actual CD out in October.

Speaking of October, we have a show coming up. We will be opening for Trivium at Peabody's on Friday, October 13. Tickets are $16 through us. We got your hook up.

More updates, coming soon...

-Tom

(Update 5-18-06): So where the hell have I been? We've done two shows since the last update, including the Cleveland Music Festival, which I never even mentioned on here. What gives? Well, I don't have an excuse, besides work, school and the rest of my time being filled doing nothing. I also have a new set of pictures and 2 videos on the way. In the meantime though, I can tell you this. We had a great time at both shows, especially the CMF. Here are the setlists for both shows (we debuted a new song on April 29, by the way).

Pirate's Cove, April 29 setlist:

-Squirrels of the Apocalypse
-Take it Slow
-Sad Destiny
-Life on Paper Street
-Loss of Existance (NEW SONG WITH COWBELL WOOHOO)
-Paranoid
-War Within Sanity

Peabody's, CMF, May 12 setlist:

-Squirrels of the Apocalypse
-Life on Paper Street
-Loss of Existance
-Take it Slow
-Road to Rock-n-Roll
-War Within Sanity
-Behind the Rows

One last thing before I go: It seems any further progress on our demo has to be halted until next month. Bass and drum tracks are complete, so it's on the way. It just won't be here in the Spring like we had orignally announced. Here's hoping for summer!

Oh yeah, and we didn't open for Taproot!

Happy Camping!
-Tom

(Update 3-9-06): Yeah I know the show was a week ago, but I've been lazy... I mean... busy. Anyway, it kicked ass. We went on at 10:30 on the main stage, right before Sighlo. Pretty soon you'll see us headlining our own gigs! Anyway, we decided not to play covers for this one. Here's the setlist:

-Squirrels of the Apocalypse
-Take it Slow
-Sad Destiny
-Life on Paper St.
-Road to Rock-n-Roll
-War Within Sanity
-Behind the Rows

Behind The Shows: Episode 3 is available now in the SHOWS section. Hit that up for the usual footage of us being jackasses and us playing Sad Destiny.

In other news, the show we were going to play on April 8 with Bill and TBS has been moved to April 29. It's still free, and still in the Pirate's Cove. Please come out to this one!

That's all I've got.
-Tom

(Update 2-18-06): I was hoping to update sooner, but due to unforseen circumstances, that didn't happen. Anyway, we lost the battle of the bands this past Sunday (shit was rigged anyway.) Well, here's the setlist we played:

-Sad Destiny
-Life on Paper St.
-Take it Slow
-Road to Rock-n-Roll
-Behind the Rows
-War Within Sanity (NEW ORIGINAL, FOOLS!)
-The Wicker Man (NEW COVER SONG, FOOLS!)

You can watch Behind The Shows: Episode 2 here. It's a good one, if I do say so myself. Footage of us doing Wicker Man inside. By the way, tell me what you think so I know to keep making more!

Regarding the demo: Phase 1 is complete

Okay, shows. We had intended to take a break to write and record after this last gig, buuuuuut we lined up three shows instead. Yeah, that's right, 3 shows to be announced right here, right now. I'll give you the biggest one first:

On Monday, March 27, Shades of Random will be opening for TAPROOT! Tickets for that are $12 through us.

And then there are these shows. Print out these fliers and use them as tickets. They've been blessed with pizie dust and will magically get you in for FREE!

That's all I've got for you today. Have you been to our MySpace?

-Tom

(Update 1-26-06): New pics up from our last show. Also, a special treat for everyone. I got some footage that day and spliced it all together into what will hopefully become a regular feature on here. It's called Behind The Shows, and you can find updates in the former waste-of-space Shows section. Not only was our last show at Peabody's our first on the main stage, but it was also our first gig of all original songs:

1) Squirrels of the Apocolypse
2) Take it Slow
3) Road to Rock-n-Roll
4) Sad Destiny
5) Life on Paper Street
6) Behind the Rows.

Oh yeah! I almost forgot. This show also marked the debut of our new singer, Tony "Butternuts" Tirabassi!

Please give Tony a warm welcome, and a hug, if you're feeling adventurous.

Right, last note, next show (and you know the routine, chat it up with one of us for tickets):

Yup. So that's what's been going on in the SOR Camp.

Peace out.
-Tom

(Update 11-17-05): I know it's usually customary for me to post a setlist after a show, but really, it wasn't that different from any setlist we've done before. But, hey, good news, we have pics up from the show. Click here or die trying. That's all, folks.

-Tom

(Update 11-02-05): Yeah, I probably should have mentioned this sooner, but I'm lazy and horrible at marketing ourselves. Anyway, here it is:

Don Vito will be the official bartender, and the cast of Viva La Bam will be on hand as DJs. And rumor has it that MTV cameras will be present... Tickets are only $15, and we only have a few left, so talk to us if you're interested.

Peace,
Tom

(Update 10-02-05): Yesterday we opened the Hurricane Katrina Relief Show to a less than sold out crowd... Anyway, not sure how the whole show turned out since we couldn't stay, but here was our setlist:

-Life on Paper Street
-Squirrels of the Apocolypse
-For Whom The Bell Tolls
-Sad Destiny
-Nibbles the Navajo Bear
-Paranoid
-Road to Rock-n-Roll
-Amazed
-Take it Slow

-Tom

(Update 9-25-05): Well, last night was interesting. First off, I'd like to apologize to anyone who came out to Peabody's to see us only to find out that our set had been cancelled. We tried our hardest to contact everyone who had tickets, but unofortunately we could not reach everyone. I'd also like to thank everyone who sucked it up and showed up at Joe's house where we performed instead. For those not in the know, here's what happened:

We showed up at Peabody's at around 5:30 last night, and we were told that the Pirate's Cove's sound wasn't working. So we were given two options: Open the main stage at 7:00 and play for 20 minutes, or pick any other upcoming show and play a 35 minute set at a guaranteed 8:30 timeslot on the main stage. So we went with the latter option, and we are now opening for The Genitorturers on October 24. Tickets for that one are $12 in advance, $15 day of show, with a $4 cover charge if you're under 21.

Now, we knew we had told people there would be a free show, and dammit, we weren't going to let them down. We put on a show at Joe's house at 9 last night and it was fun as hell. I had more fun playing there than I probably would have at Peabody's, because all of a sudden, we were in control. We were the ones saying, "We may not be able to play here, but we WILL play!" Ah, such a good time. And even our ex-singer Andy was there to sing with us on a couple of songs. Here's the setlist:

Squirrels of the Apocolypse
Nibbles the Navajo Bear (instrumental at this point)
Life on Paper Street
For Whom the Black Fades
Sad Destiny
Road to Rock-n-Roll
Take it Slow
Paranoid
Amazed

And that was it for the most part. We jammed a little bit. We gave a sneak preview of our work in progress, currently titled "Vinny Barbarino." And while Joe was out of the room, Matt, Andy, and myself tore through The Immigrant Song totally out of nowhere.

Again, thanks to everyone who came out! You guys are the ones keeping rock and roll alive!

-Tom

(Update 9-20-05): Hey, how about an update? I got a little frustrated when I realized our bandwidth was up so I kinda took a vacation from updating. But, I've taken out some of the old pictures that were eating it up, and even added a few new ones from July.

Here's some important points of interest that have taken place since the last update:

Joe Basalla has officially left the band for college, and while we're sure he'll regret it in the long one, we wish him luck. May he rest in peace. Or something. I'm no good at these things.

We've been working on new material, some of which we hope to unveil at our next few shows.

Oh yeah, new shows:

FREE SHOW
Don't be late

10-1-05 Eastlake Municipal Parking Lot 1-8 p.m.

more info soon

That's all for now, peace out.
-Tom

Update (7-7-05): Okay, so we did the show at the Hi-Fi Club, and it went over okay. Not a huge turnout, but I feel we're slowly but surely getting our name out there. And while swe're on that topic, any bands interested in hooking up to do shows send an email to shadesofrandom1@ameritech.net.

The setlist was as follows:

-Squirrels of the Apocolypse
-Paranoid
-Sad Destiny
-Road to Rock-n-Roll
-Amazed
-Take it Slow
-Life on Paper St.
-For Whom the Black Fades

In other news, we have a new show coming up. Here's that:

That's all for now. Drop us a line :-)

Love,
Tom

Update (6-27-05): The Eastlake Battle of the Bands has come and gone, and though we didn't win, we're still looking forward to our show coming up this Sunday at The Hi-Fi Club in Lakewood. Tickets are still available! And rumor has it that SOR will be taking place in another Battle of the Bands next month.

Here's what we played this past Friday, June 24:

-Sad Destiny (first time played live)
-Road to Rock-n-Roll

Also, we are in the early stages of recording a demo. More info on that.

Later,
-Tom

But first, may I direct your attention to the top and bottom of this page, where you can find links to the guestbook. It's really doesn't motivate me to update when I see that the guestbook hasn't been signed since March... So yeah, sign the guestbook if you happen to stop by. How's the layout? How's our music? -For Whom the Black Fades (Hybrid Metallica cover)

Lastly, go see Revenge of the Sith.

May the s'mores be with you,
Tom

Update (4-23-05): Hey all. We'd like to announce that we have added a new member to our lineup. Matt Tarach, of Euclid, OH, is on board the SOR crew as our new rythm guitarist. While this doesn't end our quest for a replacement for lead guitarist Joe Basalla, we're still excited and we look forward to the energy Matt will undoubtedly bring to the band.

Love and Kisses,
Tom

Update (4-8-05)

CLEVELAND MUSIC FESTIVAL 2005 ANNOUNCEMNT

Friday 5/13/05, Shades of Random will be playing Peabody's Down Under as part of the 2005 Cleveland Music Festival. We will be opening for Drowning Pool and Candiria.

And we need your help.

We have tickets to sell, and by buying from one of us, we all benefit.

Tickets from us are good as a four-day pass to all CMF-events, and only cost $12, whereas a ticket from ticketmaster.com is $15+ taxes and convenience charges, and is only good for the show you buy it for.

And as our benefit, the more tickets you buy, the higher slot we get on the bill. The top 5 selling bands will be invited to play a special matinee showcase in front of all of the major label representatives attending the CMF. Also, any band who sells 60+ tickets gets added to a drawing to perform at the previously mentioned showcase. And lastly, we make a small profit off of every ticket sale, which will go towards our band fund so that we can pay off equipment, and put it towards recording a CD.

In other news, no new guitarist yet. That little announcement up there is all I have for you as far as news goes. Also about the pictures, yeah I suck, I know. I don't know if I'll ever get around to putting them up. There are, however, pictures up on MySpace.

That is all.
-Tom

Update (3-15-05): Yeah, yeah, it's been a while, so sue me. Not a whole lot worth commenting on has been going on up until now. We've been practicing and writing songs. Hopefully by the time our next show rolls around (in May, more info on that as soon as everything's official), we'll have 3 to 4 new songs to debut: Squirrels of the Apocolypse, Sad Destiny, a currently untitled acoustic song, and one or two that are in the very early stages of creation.

In the meantime, I added a new cover song to the Audio section for you all to enjoy.

One last thing: Pictures will be up by the end of the week! I promise!

- Tom

Update (12-19-04): Well, the show went off without too many problems. Thanks to all the bands, especially Final Hour, and to everyone who came to support us. Unfortunately, we have no audio of the show, and pictures won't be in for a while. It will be my New Year's Resolution to get the pics section up and running. I just have to get the picutres themselves from a certain someone... Anyway, here's the setlist:

-For Whom The Bell Tolls
-Untitled Orignal (Instrumental)
-Lounge Act
-Hurt
-Amazed
-Take it Slow
-Paranoid

Rock and Roll,
Tom

Update (12-12-04): In wake of the recent murder of Dimebag Darrell in Columbus, the show on the 18th will now be a Dimebag tribute show. Black Tooth Grin will be the drink of the night. Also, MP3's are up. Head over to the Audio section to grab 'em.

-Tom

Update (12-4-04): Okay, so the guy we picked to be our singer, who shall remain nameless, found himself unable to participate in our band until after December, which left us screwed a tad about our show Dec. 18. Have I mentioned the show? I must interrupt myself for a moment, then.

DECEMBER 18, 2004, 7:00 P.M.: PSYCHO HOLIDAY @ QUINN'S TAVEREN (E. 185 in Euclid) FEATURING:

FINAL HOUR
RESIST
BLOOD RED ROSES
(and of course)SHADES OF RANDOM

Admission is free for anyone 21+, $5 for anyone under. First 100 guests get a free sampler CD, featuring two SOR songs: Take it Slow (original), and our cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," so get there early and show your support for Shades of Random!

So, now that you know all about that, I expect to see you all there. So back to the singer thing- Joe, our bassist, shall be filling in because we're kind of out of options. Keep in mind Joe is not a singer, and he is working extra hard to make sure this show goes off without a hitch. So be sure you thank him next time you see him.

One last thing, MP3's should hopefully be up by the end of the week.

That's All, Folks!
-Tom

Singer Update (11/17/04): So after a week of tryouts, we've chosen a singer, and if all goes well this should be a monumental step in the right direction. He'll be joining us for practice this Monday, and we'll see what we can do as far as lyrics for the music we're writing now. Also, it's looking like the second guitarist thing isn't working out. Well, that's all I have in terms of 'official' updates. Now I'm just going to tinker with the site a little more.

Peace,
Tom

Recent News (10/24/04): We've been trying out a second guitarist over the past couple of weeks. Personally, I'm digging it, so we'll see where this goes. Anyway, we've been focusing on writing songs and we have 2-3 in the works right now. Unfortunatley, without a singer, the songs aren't really going anywhere. But we are hoping to have a couple tryouts withing the next week or two, so I'll be sure to keep everyone informed. If anyone's interested, send an email to the address at the bottom of the page.

Peace,
Tom
