Mary Lane
When a stump is just not a stump

I found this little story in the Billerica newsletter archives of August 1912.  In order to see the "note" I've enclosed about Mary, it will be best if this page is viewed through Microsoft Explorer.

Here's how the story goes:

During the Indian assault in Billerica in 1692 where families were being slaughtered and captured by the Indians that resided in the woods near where the English settlers of Billerica made their homes, a woman by the name of Mary Lane was so certain of a stump that lay outside her window was not really a stump.  She alerted the man on guard - the one man on guard at the time - and asked him to shoot at it, believing that it might be an Indian.  The man laughed at her and would not shoot.  He thought she was imagining things.

Well Mary decided to take the matter into her own hands.  She told him if he would not shoot at the stump, she would.  And with that she took the gun from the guard, aimed and shot at the stump.  And lo and behold - an Indian rolled over dead from where the "stump" used to be.

Moral:  Don't underestimate the intuition of a woman.  You may find out she could be right.
