Billy Williams - The Man in the Velvet Suit

billywilliams.JPG (19917 bytes)

Billy Williams was one of the great music hall comedians of the 20th Century.  Born as Richard Isaac "Curley" Banks in Melbourne in 1878, he came to England in 1899 after a period of performing in Australia.

Once established in London, his performances became very popular.  His trade mark was a velvet suit which he wore at his performances.  In 1906, he made his first recording of "John! Go and put your trousers on!", one of his early successes on the stage.  His wit and style appealed to the audience of the time, particularly those living further afield in Britain.   It was an instant success, and they wanted more.  Billy continued recording until 1914, a year before his death in 1915 due to complications after routine surgery.   His most famous song is probably "When Father Papered the Parlour".

I have a good collection of Billy Williams discs, and am always keen on any records or memorabilia of his.

Click here to hear "When Father Papered the Parlour", recorded in 1912 (Yes - I know it's too fast.  Will try to slow it down soon)
