In
1986, in the midst of the hair-metal explosion, a documentary film called
Heavy Metal Parking Lot was made. This film, by Jeff Krulik and John
Heyn, depicted the thriving heavy metal sub-culture outside a Judas
Priest concert in suburban Maryland, USA. Fifteen years has now passed
since then and heavy metal music has passed through many phases and
mutations. Strangely, in the summer of 2000 a flood of 1970's and 80's
original line-up metal bands came through the Toronto area. Riding the
wave of heavy metal nostalgia, bands such as Kiss, AC/DC, Motley Crue,
Poison, Slaughter, Cinderella, Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Megadeth all
took to the stage. This 'second coming' of sorts stirred up the droves
of old school metal heads along with the new breed of 90's generation
kids to form a mixed congregation of fans. Inspired by sub-cultural
curiosity, I set out to visually document the enthusiasm and spontaneous
behaviour sparked by both the energy of heavy metal music and the opportunity
for many to relive the spirit of adolescence that was originally captured
in Heavy Metal Parking Lot.
