Rick Allen, drummer from Sheffield rock legends Def Leppard, is paying a visit to the Teenage Cancer Unit at the city's Weston Park Hospital today.
Rick will meet young patients and nursing and medical staff on the unit and talk about his own experiences in music and how he has overcome adversity. Rick carried on his drumming career despite losing an arm in a road accident at the height of the band's fame.
The £1 million facility which opened last autumn provides one of the UK's only cancer wards specifically designed to meet the needs of teenage patients. The unit was designed by former patients and specialist architects and looks very different to a usual hospital ward with its own chill-out areas, Playstations, private bedrooms with computer and internet access and self-catering kitchen.
Rick and his family are keen supporters of Weston Park. His mum and stepfather - Kath and Jim Daly - regularly fundraise for the hospital and Rick has just accepted an invitation to become a patron of the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal.
Rick last visited the unit in July with his own charity, the Raven Drum Foundation. Def Leppard are currently in the UK playing concerts.
The unit was officially opened by Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, in September last year.
