Hearts Beat Faster as Drummer Rick Weds

Two hearts beat as one: Rick Allen and Lauren Monroe enjoy drum therapy. Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen was today marrying his sweetheart in a ceremony in California. The Sheffield rock legend tied the knot with Lauren Anne Monroe, a massage therapy teacher with whom he has created a successful charitable music foundation.

Rick's mum Kathleen, who lives in Stannington, has flown to America with Rick's step-dad Jim Daly. The wedding has been planned for about a year.

Rick, who lost his arm in a car crash in 1984, met Lauren three years ago at a massage therapy class. Lauren, who studies tribal culture and energy medicine, started giving him visualisation exercises to use as physical therapy when he was touring with the band. As their relationship grew the couple set up the Raven Drum Foundation, a charity to help less able-bodied people through beat-related music.

Rick, who split from his first wife Stacy in 2000, says Lauren's teaching 'allowed him to experience life more vividly.' "I'm grateful for the teachings and the lessons learned," he says.

During Def Leppard's recent North American tour, US charities and children have benefited. But it is not just in America where Rick and Lauren's charity work has made a difference. The couple visited the teenager cancer ward at Sheffield's Weston Park hospital where they met young patients and held music therapy sessions. Rick described his Sheffield visit in an interview saying: "These two teenage kids who were in this cancer ward at the time, they loved it. I mean they really enjoyed it, couldn't stop smiling. "They felt good about themselves, empowered. They didn't feel alone. "My experience of being in the hospital is that one day can feel like a month, especially when you are going through chemotherapy or some other therapy. "So, we empowered them, we took them out of their own rooms for a while, and we gave them an experience where they didn't feel alone. And that was the most important thing for us."

After the wedding the couple will fly to England with the band to kick off their 10-date British tour. The tour starts on October 18 in Edinburgh and they return to South Yorkshire to play Doncaster Dome on Monday October 27.
