MP3 Databases:
The new rage is the ability to download music to your computer using one of
the various MP3 databases on the web. What most of them do is allow you to
"dip" into other people's hard drives and copy their MP3 files to your own.
This is what is called "sharing". There are numerous music databases on the
Internet. Such are:
Progressive:
MP3 allow music groups to get their product out into the online world
without the use of record labeling companies. Listeners are able to sample
music to see if they want to invest in buying the artists music. This
allows the consumer to be smarter in their purchases. By posting MP3 on the
Internet, anyone is able to listen to music and enjoy it.
Piracy:
Such music artists as Metallica and Dr. Dre feel that such companies, such as
Napster, are infringing on their artistic rights. By posting their music on
their music databases they are giving away their music for FREE. This
proves to be a big problem for the artists and the recording companies; they
are not receiving the loyalties that are rightfully due to them.
So what do you think about the case against Napster and the idea of Piracy
or Progression? Voice your opinions on our message board!
NAPSTER CASE:
The latest case in the war against MP3 databases and recording artists is
the case against Napster, the largest music-sharing file on the Internet.
With enormous amounts of users sharing files with the Napster software,
artists can't sue the people participating but the company that gave made
the software. Napster was due to shut down in September of 2000 but moments
before it's demise a judge reversed the call and so Napster is still living;
many fans were relieved. This case has to deal with the points that were
addressed above. There are numerous sites that either praise Metallic for
their courage to stand up for their artistic freedom or many who feel that
they are being greedy.
