Pit Crew 2001-2002

This year, the Pit Crew duties are divided between two people, Stephen Gilbert and Chris Kelly.

Steve is the Pit Crew Coordinator. Steve will coordinate the Pit Crew sideline pit instrument set up. Steve is the father of Megan, sophomore/trumpet/colorguard, and alumni Jenny, class of 2000.

Chris Kelly is the coordinator for "heavy hauling" for road trips this year. Chris will ensure we have drivers and vehicles for pulling the road trailer for away events. Chris is also providing his 4-wheeler for pulling the pit trailers. Chris is the father of Sara, Sophomore/clarinet.

The Pit Crew volunteers will support the students and the Director by moving band equipment throughout the year for various events. We especially need volunteers with vehicles capable of pulling a heavy trailer.

The primary function of the Pit Crew is to help set up the side line "Percussion Pit" equipment for each field show including competitions. It is important to have a dedicated team of volunteers for the Pit set up. The performance and competition scoring of the band and the pit percussionists depend on a smooth and expeditious set up and tear down. In some competitions, the Pit Crew itself is judged. Please note that the actual number of volunteers for the field show Pit Crew is limited for logistical reasons.

Some examples of Pit Crew duties are:

Towing the equipment trailer to away events throughout the year;
Loading and unloading the trailer. Assisting students with their instruments;
Assisting the students with uniform loading and unloading on the trailer;
Field show Percussion Pit set-up for home and away games and competitions;
Moving equipment as needed for concert competitions;
Moving equipment as needed for home concerts;
Maintenance of equipment trailers as needed;
Helping ensure safety and security of the students and equipment at all events;

The men and women who volunteer for the Pit Crew usually are a "unique" bunch. They have a lot of fun, too much fun, sometimes. When you work the Pit Crew, you tend to bond to one another. It is a lot of hard work, but the satisfaction of helping the students is great.
