"The more things change, the more they stay the same." Years ago lead singer Mark Fowler used to exhort the Stanton Anderson Band faithful to "stay in touch with the hotline," for the band’s upcoming schedule. These days, it’s "stay in touch with the web site." Many people couldn’t get to the SAB web site without using their telephone line. So what’s changed? Not much, really. And the same goes for Stanton Anderson, because they’re still delivering their own brand of high-energy rock & roll that made them a Long Island legend 25 years ago. The "Old, New, Borrowed & Blue Tour" resumed on 8/3 at the Village Pub in Port Jefferson. The ripping instrumental "Choppin’ Wood" kicked off the first set and the band was off and running. The big crowd was treated to two shows, with the band adding the classic SAB original "Feel Like A Fool" and the jumpin’ cover of Dylan’s "Highway 61" to the reunion repertoire.
The tour continued on 8/4, a sultry Saturday evening in Wantagh at Mulcahy’s. The term "reunion" was especially appropriate on this night, as the band had many of their friends and family in attendance. Some of the fans had brought along their families as well to share in the Stanton experience. With the big band on the big stage at Mul’s, this show really conjured up memories of the "old days" and clubs that have long since disappeared, like Speaks and Hammerheads. And for those who do indeed remember the "old days", this performance would be about as close you’ll ever come to turning back the clock. Some of the more poignant moments….Linda Mackley’s torrid drum solo during "Kitty’s Back"….Ronnie Cammeyer and Pete Tursi tossing Mardi Gras beads to the fans….Ian Platt looking like he’s never had a better time in his life….the never-ending awe of the audience over the Silecchian guitar wizardry….watching Larry Luby nodding his head to his own rhythms, the same way he did 25 years ago….Bobby Simons stepping away from the Hammond to join Tom and Lola Foy for a few steps a-la the Temptations….Mark Fowler stalking the stage like it was 1978, having lost not one inch on the voice….Boppo boppin’…."Knocking on Heaven’s Door" and the sentimentality it never fails to evoke in the band and the fans….drummer emeritus Bobby Bradley watching his old mates in the front row during "Annabel Lee", a tune he’s played hundreds of times….and finally, the SMILES. The smiles from the crowd. The smiles from the stage. One got the overwhelming feeling that the band is loving every minute of the "Old, New, Borrowed & Blue Tour" just as much as the fans are.
To the fans of the Stanton Anderson Band, the reunion rekindles memories of bygone times. Nostalgia. The way we were. To an SAB fan, it’s like the Beatles reuniting and the Dodgers coming back to Brooklyn….on their birthday! No, not much has changed at all. Stanton Anderson’s still killin’the pain, and that just goes to show you!
