Wasauksing First Nation
(formally known as
Parry Island)
Established as a reserve in 1850,
the community of Wasauksing
(which translates
into english as White Birch Reflecting off Water) consisted of three different
villages or communities in the beginning, Upper villiage, Middle villiage
and the lower villiage.
Each represented the
nations of the ojibway, odawa and pottawatomi.
Over the generations
and decades, even before Wasauksing was recorded as a reserve, the
three villiages began to inter marry with each other, which today create
what is now known as Wasauksing First Nation.
Wasauksing today consists 19,000
acres, 78 miles of lake shore and is the second biggest island of the
Great lakes and is located on Georgian Bay which opens to Lake Huron.
Before the government begin to issue reserves for Canada's First Nation
people, Wasauksing was only a summer and winter camp ground for the Ojibway
and Odawa tribes. During the relocation of the Pottawatomi in the united
states, many of the Pottawatomi were scattered throughout the states of
Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota and into parts of southern and northern
ontario.
Today Walpole Island
and Kettle Point are the only two first nations within Canada recognized
as a Potowatomi Nation.
During the relocation of the Potowamtomi,
some of Wasauksing descendants of this tribe came thorugh Michigan,
crossing the border into Canada's province of Ontario, some settling near
what is todays Windsor, Ontario.
While others continue
up through Central ontario along the shores of Lake Huron, Georgian
Bay and finally asking for permission to settle on the shores of Wasauksing
from the original inhabitants of the island.
Each family today can go back and
find their roots that will vary from regions such as Wisconsin, Michigan,
all along the Great Lakes, northern and southern ontario.
