OK. So, they ''got milk.'' But, are students drinking it, now that it comes from fancy new vending machines?
The folks at the National Dairy Council hope so. To get calcium into kids, the council has put milk vending machines in some 100 middle and high schools nationwide, including 15 in the Boston area.
The pilot program aims to make milk ''cool'' so it comes in plastic bottles instead of that baby-size milk carton grade-schoolers get. And the Backstreet Boys even sport milk mustaches above pouty lips in a photo on the side of the machines, pushing the milk-is-cool factor.
On a hot day yesterday, milk ($1 each) was a tough sell at Brookline High, where most students wanted bottled water, Gatorade, or fruit drinks. But there were a few takers.
