As you may have read by now, our Region 5 Team placed fourth at the North American Young Rider's Championships in Illinois. This is the HIGHEST placing they have ever had, and we are really proud of them. HOWEVER, as it stands right now, there is $9.00 is the Advanced Young Rider's Account, so the team for next year will have NO financial support.
USDF runs the ADVYR selection process with oversight from USA Equestrian. Neither organization pays anything to the teams for their participation. The riders themselves are responsible for fund raising. GMOs in the region as well as individuals have also made donations as a tax write off.
This year's group of rider's did not hold any fund raisers, and the money that sent them to the competition was left over from prior years. Usually we give each rider $1000.00 for their trip. The entries and stabling cost another $2800.00, and then we have the cost of our Chef D-Equipe. The total trip for the team is about $10,000.00.
Again, each region is responsible for its expenses, and if the kids for next year, the adults in this region, and the GMOs in this region don't help, the team next year will have to pay at least $2500.00 of their own money to attend.
If you would like to donate (anything helps!), please send a check made out to: USDF REGION 5/ADVYR and mail it to: Janet Brown, Regional Director 5 Sanford Road Colorado Springs, CO 80906 Thank you for your help in advance.

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) will host three instructor-certification examinations this summer and fall. The examinations are designed to recognize those dressage instructors who have a deep understanding of dressage theory, as well as an outstanding ability to demonstrate and teach the concepts and techniques of dressage.
Exam dates and locations are as follows: * Cazenovia, New York, hosted by USDF Region 8, August 7-9 * Longmont, Colorado, hosted by USDF Region 5, September 8-9 * Sherwood, Oregon, hosted by Oregon Dressage Society, October 13-14.
The exam will test the candidates on their skills in riding, teaching and longeing. Oral and written exams further test the thoroughness of the candidates' knowledge.
USDF currently offers two levels of instructor certification: through Second Level and through Fourth Level. Ninety-two instructors throughout the U.S. have passed the rigorous testings, which are administered by a faculty of certification examiners who themselves are among the top dressage trainers, instructors, and riders in the U.S. Although it is not required, previous participation in USDF instructor-education programs is highly recommended.
For more information about the USDF Instructor Certification Program, contact USDF at 402/434-8550 or www.usdf.org.

Summer is almost over, everyone is getting ready to go back to school. Where did the time go? It can't be just me that thinks time is flying by....
Remember to vote for your Participating Member Delegates. Also, send any ideas with your GMO representative to convention about how the Regional Director can help your GMO/area better. If you are not sending a delegate, please contact me so I can make sure your vote counts! We will find a proxy for you, this is important as anyone who does not send a vote has NO VOICE in choices that may effect your area.
Some news from the FEI: The FEI Dressage Committee has approved with immediate effect, the use of plastic bits at FEI Dressage events. This will be for a trial period only until the end of 2001. The bits must be rigid (soft, flexible rubber bits are not acceptable) and only the type as depicted in the Dressage Rules, Article 428, will be permitted.
Good news also for FEI Dressage Trainers, the United States Dressage Trainers Association has been formed, and will be affiliated with the International Dressage Trainer's Club, which holds meetings in Europe. Currently By-laws are being written. The first annual Dressage Trainers and FEI Dressage Judges Seminar will be held January 13-20 with Dr. Volker Mortiz in Florida. Please call Michael Poulin for more information or application information. Phone and Fax: 386-985-6190. Our Dressage Team for Region 5 has been chosen. Congratulations to our group. Thank you also to Dr. Ann Macguire, our regional coordinator and to Sharon Schneidmann our Chef d'Equipe for all their hard (and sometimes frustrating) work FOR FREE for our region. We could not function without this quality of volunteer. If you see them, be sure to thank them personally.
THANK YOU! Janet Brown Region 5 Director
