From the Gifted Fund at The Dressage Foundation

NEW HELP
FOR ADULT AMATEUR DRESSAGE RIDERS...

The Gifted Fund was established at The Dressage Foundation "to provide funding support for adult amateur Dressage riders who are working to sharpen their skills," according to John Boomer, President & CEO of The Dressage Foundation. The Gifted Fund was seeded with Donations which were received in special remembrance of Carol Lavell's great Dressage horse, "Gifted." Barbara Cadwell, Board member of The Dressage Foundation, is taking a leading role in getting the Gifted Fund up and running, and a National Selection Committee of prominent Dressage persons has been chosen to review grant applications and select recipients for funding.

Barbara Cadwell said, "The objective of the Gifted Fund is to enable adult amateur riders to set aside a week to take some concentrated work with their horse and trainer, away from the pressures of jobs and family." John Boomer said, "Carol Lavell has long had a soft spot in her heart for adult riders. We worked with Carol to establish the Gifted Fund, and it has now grown to the point where we can begin to award some grants." Boomer also said that The Dressage Foundation gets more calls for help from adult riders than any other group in the Dressage constituency. "The best way adult amateurs can get more help from the Foundation is to support the Gifted Fund with donations. We can't have all takers and no givers," Boomer said, "and to do 'good', we must first do 'well'."

Grants of $500 will be awarded annually, one in each USDF region. Should a grant not be awarded in a given Region, the money will remain in the Gifted Fund at the Foundation. Applications for 2003 funding must be received at The Dressage Foundation by October 7, 2002. The National Selection Committee will select the 2003 recipients, to be announced and presented at the Dressage Foundation's Board Meeting/Luncheon held during the USDF Annual Convention in Portland, Oregon in December, 2002.

AUGUST  MESSAGE

Region 5 August Message

Congratulations to Region 5 rider, Lauren Smith on Jaxon from
Scottsdale,
AZ who was selected for Junior Team 3 for 2002 FEI Dressage
Championships
of the Americas held July 18-21, 2002 in Blainville, Quebec, Canada.

The competition season is in full swing and I have officiated as a
Technical Delegate at several shows in the region and volunteered at
others. I am impressed with the hard work of show management and
volunteers. Be sure to thank them! I have also been impressed by some
of
the circumstances that competitors have had to compete in---heat, dust
storms, rain, motorcross on the same grounds, to name a few challenges.
Everyone did their best and no complaints!

Walter Zettl has agreed to be the instructor for the adult clinic
series to
be held throughout 2003. USDF is working on the details with the adult
education coordinators and will send out a questionnaire to determine
the
details.

Happy Riding!
