this hard decision."
Plans will proceed for the 2002 program, with dates being announced by the end of the year. Because riders who turn 22 this year will have missed the opportunity to participate in the 2001 trip, the committee will look at including such riders as candidates next year.

sons) then let me know by sending a DETAILED budget, plan, schedule, instructors, number of attendees etc. May the best plan(s) win. Just a thought on the USET/AHSA mess with the Olympic Committee: any plan that does not work with BOTH organizations will harm the entire horse community. USET does not seems to want to play, only to rule. This is a very difficult time for both organizations, and my only hope is that they will find a way (or that the USOC tells them to kiss and make up) to work this out. Having done two HUGE shows in Florida and California I can say that our PSG horses are wonderful and let's hope they can make it up to the big arena. We did a day and a half in Florida of just PSG. The Grand Prix horses are not as strong this year, which is to be expected in a non-Olympic year, and there are a lot of new former PSG horses now in their first year of Grand Prix. Some really good ones are Brentina with Debbie McDonald and Jazzman with Donna Richardson. Steffan rode Grandeur for his first show since the colic surgery and he was in top form. Natalie Lamping, Cara Whitham and I call agreed -- over 70% for the Grand Prix and the Special. It was wonderful to see.... Gunter also told me that his sponsors have purchased the reserve horse from the German Team, Nicholas, for him, and he will arrive early March. Too bad no one came forward to save Etienne for Christine, we need to keep our good horses in the USA. The Region Five show season starts in Arizona this month, good luck to everyone! Let's all get qualified early and really support Donald Simpson and Santa Fe, New Mexico for the Regional Championships!!! Glenda McElroy (of California fame) will be running the dressage shows at High Prairie Farms. This is great news for the region. She will also be bidding on the Championships each year, so we may now have a viable way to rotate this show from area to area. Congratulations to TRACY ROENICK and Kashmir from Arizona who rode like a pro at the Midwinter USET Dressage Classic and was third in the PSG with a 64.167 and WON the USET Intermediare I with a 66.08%. She rides forward, collected and her horse has a nice long neck stretching OUT to the bit. WELL DONE!!! Janet Brown

The American Horse Shows Association (AHSA) governs the breeds and disciplines in U.S. horseshows. The United States Equestrian Team (USET) governs the international aspects. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) does not feel either the AHSA or the USET is the National Governing Body (NGB) that it requires.
Until a new NGB is developed and approved by the USOC, both the AHSA and the USET continue operating, with the USOC overseeing each organization's daily activities.

Young Rider European Program Postponed Due to FMD Uncertainties in Europe

LINCOLN, NE -- Due to the ongoing crisis in Europe with Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and the uncertainty of what the summer may bring, the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) and The Dressage Foundation (TDF) have announced the postponement of their joint Young Rider European Training and Education program for 2001. The summer program designed to broaden the understanding and experience of advanced young dressage riders planned to take a small group to stables and competitions in Germany and Holland. Assuming all animal health issues are resolved within the year, the program will resume in the summer of 2002.
Although Foot & Mouth Disease does not effect horses or humans, both can be carriers of the highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, hogs, deer and other animals with cloven hooves. Access to farms in affected areas can be restricted or denied and extreme precautions, including laundering of all clothing and disinfecting of shoes and vehicles, must be taken when going from farm to farm. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommendations for those returning to a U.S. farm from farms in affected areas are unwieldy for those on a short tour.
"With FEI competitions being cancelled in several countries and the continuing spread of this disease into Europe, the committee voted to err on the side of caution in postponing the program for one year," said John Boomer, President and CEO of The Dressage Foundation, which funds the program. "The possibility of the educational value of this experience being compromised by lack of easy access to training stables, or having to cancel the trip at the last minute after donor funds had been spent helped the committee make

USDF Region 5 March Message Janet Brown, Regional Director My 'free money' article did get some phone calls, so I am glad some of you are reading!!! The USDF Junior and Adult money can only go to groups or for mass education, not to individuals. The Regional Scholarship Fund can be used by GMO's or by individuals. I have guidelines for this fund, please send me your MAILING ADDRESS and I will send you a form and guidelines. We pick winners in December for the NEXT year. Do not apply for something THIS YEAR. The USDF money however, is for 2001, so if you have a project for this year which would educate a LARGE number (not just riding les
