Silent Chess

A silent glance broke the air
The furtive stare formed a melody
Nervous shoes on wooden floors
Were joined in cacophonous revelry by
The echo of a gleeful cry
And the painful moan of olden doors
They saw each other first in fright
This night as dark as ebony

As they moved more motionlessly
A shout of joy far off brought them back
The two eyed and eared for a little while
Putting on airs that hide an interest
In the other’s ways, they tried their best
To shy away while still searching a sheepish smile
They could not bear the fact that the other was merely standing there
While their hearts were wishing exactly that

This sneaky game of silent chess
Went on throughout the night
They tried their best to keep their minds
On the task which was at hand
But all the while they couldn’t stand
Pretending their minds to each other blind
The cold winds blew through leaves upon the lonesome trees outside
And caught short glimpses of warm slow light

At last the time would come to an end on these that parted with cunning grin
Their hidden wish to speak would come when at last they met again
