In this class you will learn about one of the Commonwealth of Independent States ( CIS). The CIS countries used to be apart of the Union of Soviet Social Republic, until it broke apart in 1991. The Commonwealth of Independent Country that we will be exploring is Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan gained its independence On August 30, 1991.
Location of Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is in southwestern Asia right on the borderer of the Caspian Sea, between Iran and Russia. Azerbaijan is 61 degrees Latitude and 40.25 degrees Longitude.
Key Terms : Latitude- Is how far North or South of the equator a place is.
Longitude- Is were a place is east or west

The Flag
Azerbaijan's flag has three different colors; from top to bottom: blue, Red, and Green. The Flag also has a white crescent and an eight-pointed star in the middle of it.
The eight-pointed star stands for the eight Turikic people.
The color Blue stands for the people.
The color Green stands for Islam.
The color Red stands for modernization and progress.
The Anthem
The Anthem of Azerbaijan is called "Azerbaijan National Hymn." It was written in 1937 by Ahmed Javad, a poet that was executed (killed).

In the American alphabet the letter I comes after the letter H, but in the Azeri alphabet the letter X comes after H. That's amazing isn't it?! take a few minutes and try to sound out how the Azeri alphabet is pronounced.
