The Desert View High School girls tennis team pulled off an uncommon feat with a win over Sabino yesterday.

Desert View emerged with a 5-4 victory over the Sabercats after a win in the No. 3 doubles match. Desert View's Pattie Fregoso and Kristin Othon won the decisive match over Kimmy Ross and Alyssa Berger 10-7.

"This our first victory over Sabino in the 11 years I've been coaching, so this is a most satisfying win," Jaguars coach Stacy Haines said. "Fregoso and Othon are very consistent in doubles."

Sabino sophomore Tricia Greene won her No. 1 singles match over Tanya Cota 10-3.

"I tried to stay consistent," Greene said. "My opponent was getting down on herself, and she was getting anxious. I stayed patient."

Desert View (3-1) got a win in a hard-fought singles match with Leonisa Lewis defeating Whitney McGovern 10-8 at No. 2.

"She couldn't hit corners, and it worked to my advantage," Lewis said. "She has been the toughest opponent I've ever faced."

In another close doubles match, Sabino's Greene and McGovern defeated Cota and Lewis 10-7.
