In the spotlight

Bethany Kashian

Desert View tennis • junior • 5-2

● The lowdown: Kashian started the season playing No. 3 for the Jaguars, but her play quickly thrust her into the second spot on the team. She was eliminated in the second round of the Class 4A Kino regional tournament last season, but she's already off to a 5-2 start. Teams can expect a lot more from Kashian this year.

● Pre-match preparation: "I focus on my strategy for the match, and that depends on who I am playing."

● Favorite movie: "Serendipity"

● Dream doubles partner: Serena Williams. "If she is down, she gets right back up and always plays her hardest. She inspires me to do the best I can."

● Dream opponent: "Lindsay Davenport because she has this amazing power."

● The odds on beating Davenport: "Her knees are going out, so I might be able to get her on the low ones." Translation: Not good.

● Favorite travel spot: "Hawaii. It's just so tropical and relaxing. New York is competitive with Hawaii, though, because there is so much to see."

● Racket of choice: Prince

● Toughest competitor in Southern Arizona: The entire Catalina Foothills girls tennis team.

● Favorite food: Mexican food, especially enchiladas.

● Dream date (other than her boyfriend, of course): Michael Jordan … then actor Orlando Bloom … and finally, Philadelphia 76er Allen Iverson

● Aspirations after graduation: "I'm looking forward to going to university to study medicine, and play tennis, of course."

● Dream job: Plastic surgeon

● Tucson hot spot: Park Place mall, because it has a nice movie theater.

● Role models: "My mom and sister. My sister encourages me to go on in difficult times, and my mom is always supportive."

● Coach-speak: "What made her special this year is that she expected to play No. 3. Bethany stepped up her game to play No. 2 and has done well. She's a real competitor and never quits trying. It's fun to watch because she is always trying to figure out a way to win." - Desert View coach Stacy Haines
