In his 13 years at the helm of Desert View's girls tennis program, Stacy Haines has graduated a number of Jaguars to the next level. But not once had he witnessed one of his players win a region crown. That ended Friday when Bethany Kashian won the 4A Gila Region singles title at Desert View.

In a grueling three-set match, No. 1-seeded Kashian celebrated her 18th birthday with a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-0 victory over Palo Verde's Danielle Petersen. Before Kashian breezed through the final set in 15 minutes, she and No. 2 Petersen endured almost two hours of quality tennis.

"I wanted this so bad," Kashian said. "I ran down everything."

The top three finishers in singles and doubles automatically qualify for next Saturday's individual state finals at the Paseo Tennis Center in Glendale. Douglas' Nancy Owen grabbed the final state slot with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Desert View's Priscilla Rojas in the third-place match.

In the doubles final, Douglas' Elisa Owen and Stephanie Shelton routed fellow Bulldogs Evelyn Owen and Alexis Romero 6-0, 6-3. Cholla's Cristina Ramirez and Rachel Lockey earned the final spot in state by edging Desert View's Tabby Collister and Jessica Peña 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1.
