Jaguars excited to have fewer players

Try running a successful tennis program where you have only four courts to support a team with more than 40 players. Desert View coach Stacy Haines will tell you that it's next to impossible.

But that was the scene at Desert View for the last three years when it was a member of the United States Tennis Association's No-Cut Program.

The No-Cut Program is designed so that tennis players of all abilities can join a school team without the fear of roster cuts.

Haines liked the program but said it had a major flaw.

"It just wasn't feasible," he said. "It wasn't fair to the girls because they weren't getting the instruction that they deserved."

So Haines elected to dump the program this year, and now with the roster capped at 18 players the Jaguars look ready to make a run at the 4A-I state playoffs.

With fewer bodies on the courts, Haines can focus on developing the premier talent while not having to divert too much attention to teaching basics to entry-level players.

Here are three things to know about the Jaguars this season.

1. Senior priority

Cynthia Ramirez and Kyla Kemp are Nos. 1 and 2 on this year's squad and the only seniors. Rounding out the rest of the top six players are three juniors and a sophomore.

Kemp said the practices without the No-Cut Program have greatly benefited the team.

"We get so much more individual time with the coaches and trainers," she said. "It makes a huge difference."

2. Life valedictorian

Academically, Kemp ranks first in a senior class of 358 with a 4.289 grade-point average. She is currently enrolled in five advance-placement courses and has earned a full-ride scholarship to Stanford.

The senior also plays the violin, piano, cello, bass guitar and drums in Desert View's orchestra.

Kemp's favorite course is calculus and she plans on double majoring in aeronautics and mechanical engineering. She said she wants to work at Raytheon Missiles System after she finishes college.

When asked what it takes to maintain such a rigorous schedule, Kemp's answer was simple.

"You just have to want it," she said. "It takes dedication, devotion and motivation."

3. Looking ahead

Sadiya Buta, a Kenyan refugee who won the Tennis Challenger tournament at Tucson Racquet & Fitness Club earlier this year, is probably the most talented player on the Jaguars roster, Haines said.

The sophomore Buta, along with juniors Vania Meraz, Gabriela Serrano and Yoandra De La Torre, are the future.
