Robert Mervyn (Tim) Heath passed away on May 23,1999, at St Joseph's Hostel, Tweed Heads South, NSW. Tim was born at Pittsworth on April 30,1906, to Robert and Georgina (nee Porter) Heath and lived in that lovely country town all his young life with his parents and family. His parents and his brothers and sister all predeceased him ? Oliver in 1969, Thelma (Ogilvie) in 1956, and Neville in 1970. Tim's father came to Australia from England aged 13 years to join his brother in station work, eventually arriving at Pittsworth. The father established a hairdressing and billiard saloon business at Pittsworth, married Georgina Porter and raised a family of three boys and a girl. Tim was educated at Pittsworth, leaving high school to help his father in business. He also became interested in signwriting about this time, earning extra money providing this service to local businessmen in those early days. After many years in his father's business, Tim took a foreman's position with Bert Newell's Hairdressing Saloon, Queen Street, Brisbane. After some years in Brisbane, Tim moved to Millmerran to manage a sick friend's hairdressing and billiard saloon. He later purchased this business and worked it for some five years. Tim met Imelda Healy at Millmerran and they married in Holy Name Church, Toowoomba, in 1931. Soon after being married Tim and Imelda left Millmerran for Gatton, where they opened a hairdressing business and worked there for 35 years. They retired from business in 1969, moving to their holiday home at Mermaid Beach. The retirees have since lived a full and happy life of friendship and sport surrounded by many locally domiciled relatives and friends. Always interested in sport, Tim was keen on gymnastics, cricket and tennis as a young man. It was over the last 65 years he found his true challenge in golf. Almost to his last days Tim was an active, dedicated player of the game, with his every conversation having mentioned the sport he favoured for most of his life. Tim and Imelda were life members of the Gatton Golf Club, members of the Toowoomba Golf Club and members of the Coolangatta and Tweed Heads Golf Club. An avid student of the game, Tim was always available and willing to offer advice and encouragement to his numerous good friends, especially any beginners taking up the challenge of his favourite sport. Over the last year or two of his life, Tim battled circulation problems, struggling to keep up his participation in golf. His failing health did prevent his active social play. However, Tim did enjoy visiting many of the coast's practice courses with his golfing mates. A loving husband and generous friend, Tim will be sadly missed by his loving wife Imelda, his many relatives and his large circle of friends. CONTRIBUTED
