  • Kangwondo vacation

I went on a trip to Kangwondo on the weekend with two students and their family. Kangwondo is just east of my province, and is on the eastern coast.

The car ride was from 9 to about 12:30. A gust of wind from an open window blew my sweet potato sticks all over my lap and the floor, so I made my students eat it.

The guy is named Oojeen and the girl is Sujin, although her English name is Suzie.

We got to Gangneung for lunch on the coast. Heavy on the seafood, being a coastal city.

I took pictures outside of the fish tanks.

I don't want to know what these things are, or if I ate any of them.

    Here's the ocean.

Although it was raining, some people went swimming, except for this hot girl holding the umbrella.

Next we went to a memorial for the Korean War. I think this one might have been for the attempted invasion of South Korea in 1996, when the army found a North Korean submarine and then the bodies of the North Korean soldiers nearby.

    Here's the beautiful beach.

Land ho! Hard a starboard! Hard a starboard!

I had to get a picture so I could read this girl's shirt.

Also at this monument was the captured North Korean sub. There were helmets to wear because the ceiling is low, but Oojin and I were brave.

    The way out.

    Helmets.

    Here's the ship.

And the North Korean sub. It was made out of plastic to avoid detection.

Right after I took this picture, these two people spoke and fell in love and ran away somewhere.

And these people just had weird hair.

Translating some of the words he needed.

Next we went to Jungdongjin for a second lunch. These hands are on the grounds of the hotel.

This is Jungdongjin. Koreans board a late-night train to come here and watch the sunrise.

We went up to the top floor of the hotel for western food.

Here's the lovely beach. It was raining too hard for swimming.

If you think this boat-shaped building is weird, you should've seen the one we were on. Sorry, no pictures.

Sadly, they couldn't get me to erase this incriminating photo.

Now these are from the condos we were staying in.

It was their mom's birthday so we had a Pikachu cake.

And I had my first bath in seven months.

The next morning, it was still raining.

We left around 11 and headed in the direction of home. After plenty of group shots.

Including this one which makes them look like a band.

It was raining, so there was debate whether to go to Odaesan. We visited the Buddhist temple nearby, while Suzie and her mom waited in the car.

This picture was very close to being illegal and capturing part of the Buddha statue.

I was wondering all the time what this clip on their dad's seat belt was for. Then I finally figured out it's to keep it from retracting too far and being tight.

This picture is either the last in Kangwondo or the first in Kyunggido.

The end. Here's the toll booth at the end of the expressway outside northern Suwon.

    Using up batteries on Friday

I'm about to go to Kangwondo for the weekend, so I needed to drain my batteries on Friday. I took pictures at two classes.

Jennifer fell asleep in class several times. Finally I decided it was proper to take out my camera and snap this picture.

After that, they all wanted to pose in pictures. Here you can see Daffy, Katie, and part of Jennifer sleeping.

Helen did her best to read as much comics as she could.

For Brian, Steve, Laura, and Sonya's class, we went outside for a picnic to celebrate finishing one textbook.

I think we came just a little too close to the DMZ.

They almost managed to knock my scooter over.
