Many users worry about nickel, which is in surgical stainless steel, leaching into their water bottles. Nickel toxicity is usually not a problem unless several grams are ingested from non-dietary sources,
or unless there is a natural tendency to retain too much nickel, which could lead to asthma, angina or
other cardiac symptoms.
Numbers such as 18/10 and 18/8 refer to the amount of chromium and nickel that is in a specific surgical stainless steel. 18/10 means that there is 18% chromium and 10% nickel. The steels which contain more nickel are normally less corrosion resistant and have a brighter shine/luster, but are not always the best choice for water bottles because you are drinking directly from the bottle itself. Many surgical stainless steel water bottles are 18/10 count, meaning 18% chromium and 10% nickel.
Our water bottles are constructed of surgical stainless steel with an 18/8 count, meaning 18% chromium and 8% nickel. We use this count because we feel that, in the long run, the bottle still retains its corrosive resistance but an 18/8 count is healthier for the user than an 18/10 count.
