Image Info...
This image was taken in October 1999. It is a feature called "The Subway" and is located in North Creek in Zion National Park. It has become a very popular place, so plan on making reservations and getting a permit at the backcountry office in the park if you'd like to go. The water flowing through the image continues for several miles downstream, which is where the hike actually begins. Boulder-hopping and shifting from bank to bank can help keep your feet dry. The clear water in this canyon creates numerous small waterfalls and riffles as it cuts though various sandstone layers. The day needed to do the hike is filled with many beautiful and unusual water-sculpted areas, though the Subway is probably the most dramatic feature.
In addition to being a rather chilly place, the Subway, as its name suggests, is also quite dark. This image was exposed for around 20 seconds. Luckily the light is rather balanced with the warm orange light at the end being not too different in brightness than that of the blue shadowed areas. The yellow glow is actually light that is being reflected into the Subway from sunlit, brownish sandstone just to the right and out of sight in this image. One of the most striking features of the Subway is the green pools, one of which can be seen on the right side of the image. It is a complete mystery to me. I can't explain the color or its illusionary appearance, but it sure makes a nice element in a photograph.
This image was taken with a Nikon FM2 35-mm camera and 24-120 mm zoom lens. The zoom was set at 24-mm and exposure was at f/19 or f/22.
