Sisters in Crime is a
nationwide organization that exists to combat discrimination against women
in the mystery field, to educate publishers and the general public as to
the inequalities in the treatment of female authors, and to raise the level
of awareness of their contribution to the field. Much has improved since
the early days of the organization, but it's a job that is never completely
finished. Today there are nearly 50 chapters across the country and there
are thousands of members, both female and male.

DESERT SLEUTHS CHAPTER MEETINGS

Sleuths Chapter of Sisters in Crime meets at 6:30 P.M., the third Wednesday of the month, at Café Carumba,
located at 7303
E. Indian School Road, Phoenix.
Meeting Agenda
6:30-7:00
P.M.--business
meeting
7:00 P.M.--speaker or programs
The public is welcome to attend any Desert
Sleuths Chapter program.
NOVEMBER MEETING: Wednesday, November 18, 2009. We are pleased to welcome Patrick Millikin, Phoenix Noir editor, as our guest
speaker. A starred review in Publishers
Weekly states that Phoenix Noir—the
latest in Akashic Books' series of crime
anthologies, each set in a different city or region—is a “must
read” for noir fans.
Contributing authors include Diana Gabaldon, Jon
Talton, James Sallis, Stella Pope-Duarte, Charles
Kelly, Robert Anglen, and Laura Tohe. One or more authors will accompany Patrick, also
a contributor, to the meeting. When Patrick started selling books at the
Poisoned Pen 14 years ago, he admits he was a bit of a literary snob, but
discovering crime fiction, especially early hardboiled authors like Chandler,
Hammett and Cain, proved a life-changing experience. Patrick also says he
loves the increasingly lost art of hand-selling books and trading
recommendations with customers. The public is welcome to attend this
informative presentation.
